Oronio Weekly Times. Wedniesday, Janiary '17, 19 V"e e "By Kate Lang Darryl & Dustin Reid after far I could have gone with winning the Gold Medal at it." the Canada Games in B.C. When I was a kid, my younger sister and I used to push Dustin Reid around because be would be picking on our brother. Dustin says that he got to push his brother Darryl around, so it all evened out. Now that my cousins are both 6'l" and about 185 lbs each, I'm glad our pushing around days are over. Dustin, 21 and Darryl, 19 bave always been involved in sports. Over the past couple of years, they have really been making a name for themselves in the sport of Volleyball. Dustin is currently on the Canadian National Volleyball team, based in Calgary, and bas been for 2 years. Darryl is going to school at Durham College and playing on their volleyball team. Both were on the Ontario Volleyball team in 1994 and went to the Canada Games in B.C. together. "Over the past couple of years, we have really been growing closer. That trip was a big part of it," Darryl comments. Dustin played baseball, basketball and hockey when he was younger, and excelled at all three. "Hockey was by far, my favourite. From the ages of 5 to 15, all I wanted to do was play hockey. "Once I bit 15, I started getting into volleyball and took a year of playing other sports. I wasn't very good at it and never dreamed I would get this far. Part of the reason that I improved so much was because I practiced and put alot of time into it. "Unfortunately, when you spend so many hours at one sport, other interests get put on the back burner. I haven't played hockey now for 5 years. My only regret is that I will never know how Darryl has also been a natural athlete, for as long as I can remember. He showed his talents in hockey, baseball and basketball, but he recalls his favourite as being soccer. "Where else do you get to kick things, as a kid, and get away with it." By grade 7 and 8, Dustin was already playing volleyball and Darryl would join in for the fun of it. Then tragedy struck. One of Dustin's friends and teammate Ken Davies was killed by a drunk driver. Darryl recalls, "It really effected everyone who knew him. His brother was one of my best friends and we would get together and just play some volleyball, because that is what Ken loved to do. We found that it was really helping us deal with the sadness and sense of loss that we all felt." Over the past couple of years, the brothers have travelled alone, and together to compete in such places as Japan, Greece, Brazil, Cuba, Porta Rico and Chile. "We have bit almost every continent," says Dustin. I asked them if they thought that it was important for kids to get involved in sports. "Physical fitness is always important but not necessarily every child is suited for sports. If they are not interested, it is not doing anyone any good. I have been on teams where I have seen guys that just don't want to be there. It's a real shame when kids want to get involved but just can't afford the equipment." Dustin says, "However, sports has taught me alot of valuable lessons in life, like discipline. You can't play in high levels of any team if you don't have discipline. I have also come a long way with my social skills Marie Nelson Certified Nutritionist 983-8278 Nu-tritionCounslling_& Lifestyle Balancing This is National Non- Smoking Week, the week to .encourage those who smoke to kick the habit. There is a great deal of information available to explain the dangers of smoking. The pictures and statistics are frightening. Sometimes it is hard for a non-smoker to truly understand why it is so hard for you to quit, but l'Il try. Dear Smoker, I don't know why you have chosen this method of slow suicide. That may seem a little harsh, but you and I both know smoking kills. Maybe you started smoking before we became aware of how dangerous smoking really is. Maybe you knew, but decided not to listen or to believe you were immune to the effects. It was your choice, it is still your choice, and that is how it should be. As a nutritionist, and a childhood secondhand smoke inhaler, I know what cigarettes do to your body, it's scary. Over the years I have watched friends and family try very hard to give up this addiction, sometimes they were successful and sometimes they were not. It was always bard. I have a friend who told me not to worry, and getting along with people. You may not always get along with the guys you are playing with, but the team comes first." Darryl adds to that, "You learn to work together for a common goal. Personally, I have really learned how to play under pressure. The friendships that you develop are unforgettable." What does the future hold'? "My goal is the Olympics. That would be terrific. If I don't make it, at least I'll know that I gave it my best shot." Dustin remarks, "After the summer, I'll go back to the University of Toronto and probably continue the Phys Ed course. I took a year off to play on the National Team." Darryl is in the Sports Administration program at school and would like to follow that up as a career. "I would like to open up a sports camp some day. For now, I'm just happy if I can fit in the odd game of squash, baseball or bowling. Dustin and I try to get in some golfing over the summer. Orono should be very proud of these two life long residents. I'm proud to call them my cousins. he believes he can raise his body's vibration to a level where the cigarette smoke will not hurt him, just like the gurus who suffer no ill effects from snake bites. His hacking cough and frequent colds tell me he hasn't quite succeeded, at least not yet. I sometimes wonder why he doesn't use his belief system to help him quit, instead of using it to 'protect' himself from the ill effects. I had another friend who was diagnosed with AIDS, the doctors told him to quit, it would improve his chances of living longer. He had a young son he wanted to be with, so he tried, but the stress of quitting, combined with everything else that was going on proved to be too much. He kept smoking and died of pneumonia 9 months later. I understand he had to do what was right for him, but I still miss him and so does his son. m As a nutritionist, I know your body will heal, if it is given the opportunity. I have observed and encouraged this healing in others. It is truly a miracle of life. This is something to be thankful for. People who have quit are often amazed by their body's ability to recover. They want to share their experience of freedom from the addiction and their feelings of health with everybody. Although their intentions are good, this zestful desire to communicate the benefits of not smoking can be quite irritating to those who are not ready to consider quitting. I respect your right to choose your own way, I just want you to know that I'm here to help. Dear Non-Smokers, Offer to help a smoker this week. No nagging, no gory pictures, no grim statistics - the media will take care of that. Simply go to a smoker you care about, tell them you care and let them know you are willing to help. Don't tell them what to do, let them tell you when they are ready and what they need. Help them find a reason to choose life.
