Letter To The Editor Celebrating a 'Common Cents' Christmas. The only items we now open from Christmas 'past' are the envelopes arriving in the mail with our credit card statements. These state- ments show no Christmas gift purchases and zero bal- ances. At Christmas, my spouse and I did not exchange gifts, we paid cash for our chil- dren's presents and drew names among family mem- bers. We celebrated the 'real' meaning of Christmas with our church family, gave to the needy and made enjoy- able visits with family and friends. It was my spouse and I that decided that we brace our family from Mike Harris' 'Common Sense Revolution' by introducing our own 'Common Cents Revolution' to prepare for the unknown. This decision was not dif- ficult since my job in the public sector could be one of many in jeopardy. These comments are not intended to thrash-out at the economic 'whip' of the provincial goverment's debt reduction strategy but to purely illustrate the reaction of consumer spending. Until the voters see evi- dence of the promised incre- mental 30 percent reduction in personal taxes over the term of the provincial gov- ernment, slumping retail sales will continue to plague any economic recovery. This will unfortunately put pres- sure on reducing unemploy- ment (the mechanism to generate the tax return) and eventually make our tax rebate a myth. The majority of provincial voters, like ourselves, gave their support to the Mike Harris Government. The polls still show the -support of the government but peo- ple are now asking why so quick with all the change? Our government advise us to please remember the story of the race between the tortoise and the hare. The hare was fast moving but unfocused whereas the tor- toise maintained a steady pace and won the race!
