West Meets West At Fast Paced Game, Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, Jajnuary 31, 1996 - 3) Orono Public School News Sommer West and her father Steve West, take the ceremonial puck drop from Blain Moffat, chairperson of the Fund raising Committee. The game was used as a fund raiser for the girls tearn and for the new !ce resurfacer. The Game ended in a 3-3 tie. We must thank our MPP, John O'Toole for clearing the myths surrounding the public spirited but woefully misunderstood bill, our beloved Bill 26. (see Myths January 17 Orono Weekly Times) Why is it that the media always tries to confuse us with the facts? Why don't they just print the simple rhetoric that the Harris government spits out for our consumption. It would make Harris' job much easier and we wouldn't have to worry our pretty heads about all that boring legislation stuff! A tip of the hat to Mr. O'Toole for pointing out that the introduction of a bill does not invoke debate. I guess John forgot to mention that the 2000 page bill was to be rammed through in a matter of days. How anyone could effectively debate a bill of this size let alone read it in a couple of days is beyond me. Harris' own ministeis have had difficulty understanding the bill and answering questions. (much to the g o v e r n m e n t s embarrassment - Mr. Leach) Mr. O'Toole rightly dispels the myth that this is the first Omnibus bill - one affecting many laws. He did forget to mention that an Omnibus bill normally is used for housekeeping on laws - changing a few words fro clarification - not changing the entire intent of the bill. Oh yea, John also forgot about the months of public input into previous government Omnibus bills. The myth that the people of Ontario were not consulted on this bill John handles quite nicely by reminding us all of the incredible , power we bestowed on Harris June 8th. While I can't find any reference to this bill in the campaign or Common Sense Revolution and I don't remember being asked whether I wanted a municipal gas tax, increased property taxes, a poll/head tax. my pension to be ripped off or health care dismantled - he must be right he does represent the government, after all and they wouldn't mislead us, would they? John reminds us that any new municipal user fees, poll taxes, etc.. .will not be his fault - after all, the bill doesn't force municipalities to do these awful things. It does give them the right to, but nobody is forcing them. The reduction in provincial transfers to the municipality will provide an opportunity for each of us to cough up an extra $185 a year in fees - thanks John, we all want to help. Tampering with arbitrators powers, publication of our medical records, robbing public service pensions, dismantling health care - these things must all be misunderstood by the public. John forgot to dispel one other myth. Myth: This government is in touch with the people of Ontario. Reality: People across this province are sick of the arrogance and inhumanity of this government. We demand a province we can be proud of - one where democracy is practiced (successfully), the government listens to the people and where we respect and care for one another. My instructions to my MPP - lets get Ontario working, but never at the expense of democracy. You are not authorized by your constituents to vote against our wishes. You are, however, authorized to vote agarnst the Harris party line when it is against our wishes. If you do not, then you are not fairly representing your constituents - we put you there we can also remove you. Specifically on Bill 26, John, extend public hearings, let Ontario speak and heed their suggestions, don't let Harris bully your deccisions. We know what we want - ask us! We did and now we are back at school ready to work. We are studying about dinosaurs. We are learning about some dinosaur names and how they got around. We have learned theories about how some dinosaurs became extinct. Do you know what dinosaur means? Loot at the end to find out. Before dinosaurs was The Age of Jellyfish, The Age of Shellfish, The Age of Fish, The Age of Amphibians and the Age of Reptiles. We are learning to spell dinosaur words. We use some of these words when we write stories. We are trying to be like Orono U.C.W. Submitted by Whenever I travel into downtown Toronto, I try to remember to have money handy in my pocket. There are always street people looking for help. At the Oshawa Presbyterial U.C.W. (United Church Women) workshop held at Price Albert on January 23rd, and attended by five members of the Orono U.C.W., I leamed that one ýneed not go to Toronto to find the homeless. Gate 3:16, a Christian Drop - In Centre on King St. E., Oshawa serves many hungry, homeless and hurting people. Dinosaur means Terrible Lizard. This Week's Kidsview Do you think there will be any more snow? a) No, because Spring is staiting. b) Yes, because after it rains a lot it starts to snow sometimes. c) Yes, because it's getting colder everyday. d) Yes, because the slush will turn into ice and it will be cold enough to snow. News Dorothy Robinson Later, Fred Zufferey and Lee Kierstead informed the group about the wide range of programs offered by the South Oshawa Community Development Project, and Health Centre. Both Gate 3:16 and S.O.C.D.P. provide services by caring and committed staff and volunteers. In the afternoon, Mary Sproul presented the U.C.W. Mission Study Kit which was made available in September 1995. It will be current until June 1997, and Mary highly recommended it as a rich source of material on the theme: "Money, Work and Meaning". With so many workers faced with job loss, this study has particular relevance in our changing times.
