6 - Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday. Januaxy 31, 1996 Qulit Show At Orono United.Church United Way Exceeds $3 Million The Three Million Dollar mark has been surpassed for the third year in a row by the United Way of Oshawa/Whitby/Clarington. 'Because of the dedication of our over 2,000 volunteers and the generosity of thousands of donors, we can be proud of this accomplishment, especially in such uncertain times", commented Cindy Murray; Executive Director. "At this point we are reporting $3,010,000.00 raised, a number which includes many activities in coming months that we hope will be successful." This annual fundraising campaign is primarily conducted in workplaces across Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington, but a portion of the total raised is derived from successful perennial events, such as the upcoming "Home Free House Raffle". Donations received through the United Way campaign benefit more than 80,000 people through supporting over 40 local agencies whîch provide over 200 programs. "Although encouraged by the total amount raised, there is concern about the ramifications of not reaching the figure we had deemed necessary", says Marianne Zakarow, President of the Board of Directors. "The United Way Board of Directors has been meeting to discuss the effects of this discrepancy and an announcement is expected in the coming days." Despite one of the worst days of the winter weather- wise, the Orono United Church hosted a beautiful Quilt Show, on Saturday January 27. Over 100 people braved the elements to view the handiwork of so many folks. One hundred and six quilts of every pattern and hue, with many of the old favourites -- double wedding ring, necktie, dresden plate, log cabin, the star, appliques, etc. One of our weII known con- tributors, Mrs.. Donna Gunter- Oshawa, daughter- in-law of Clare and Margaret Gunter of Orono, brought many exotic samples of her handiwork. She also won the peoples choice award for best in show. One item of particular înterest was a design of small fans made up of cotton pieces stuffed with batten, the con- tribution of Mrs. Karen Yoarth, Main St. Orono. These are sewn together and then embroidered together. The outer edge is beautifully fringed in white wool. This is actually a comforter, rather than a quilt. The main auditoriuim and lower C.E. hall were both filled Mth quilts oni display, along withi tables of pillowv shamis, wall -hIangings, scarv-,es anid other quiilted artt- dles. Aniother interestîng display was live working groups, Mrs. Inez Harris and Mrs. Eleanor Terrill actually quilting on stage. Mrs. Dorothy Barnett at another table tying a crib quilt. Some of the quilts were quite historic and several old autographed quilts drew much interest. The committee in charge of this large event were Mrs. Bertha White, Mrs. Donna Scott, Mrs Dorothy Robinson, and Mrs. Eleanor Terrill just to narne- a few! Thie kitchen committees served a delicious luncheon tio the many brave visitors on sucli a storrny day.
