6 - Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday. February 14, 1996 Major Plumbing Novice Stili In Playoff Hunt A break in the playoff schedule saw the Novice in an exhibition game against the Port Hope Novice Rep team on Friday, February 9. They had played each other before and were 1-1-0. The game on Friday was also a close one and the final score was 1 -1. Scoring for Orono was Andy Bangay, #11, with an assist to Justin Caruana, #17. Playoff action continued on Sunday, February 1 in Omemee. Orono was sharp off the bat with Paul Richter, #8, making a nice pass out from behind the net to Kyle Allin, #10, who put Orono up 1-0 at 8:52. Also assisting on the goal was Jason Geraldi, #16. Goalie Ian Crashley played stellar goal tending throughout the game with many great pad and glove saves. Orono misses many chances to score with Taylor Doyle, #9, just missing the net and Bangay and Dunham being beat by the Omemee Goalie. The second period was scoreless but Kyle Cox, #14, took 2 minutes for body contact and Justin Caruana, #17, had a breakaway which was foiled by the net minder. Pisani, #15, took away several shots from Omemee by sticking to his man. Orono needed an insurance goal and it came off the stick of Steve Gregg, #7. Following up on a puck carried in by Chris Moffat, #5, Gregg picked up the puck and went high on the goalie. This came at 8:38. Passing was the order of the day and Garlick and Dunham showed their skills. They were not able to score but drew a penalty. Evan Moore, #3, played an outstanding game along the blueline and in front of the net using his soccer skills more than once to move the puck. Defenseman Moffat made a nice clearing shot in the crease as the puck lay open with Ian unable to get to it. Late in the third, with 19 sec. remaining, Geraldi took 2 minutes for hooking. Omemee pulled their goalie and Richter had a shot on net just at the buzzer but it missed the target. Orono came away 2-0 winners with a shut-out going to the deserving Ian Crashley. Kendal News Well it is beginning to look like we are getting closer to spring, one day nice, one day miserable, oh well the groundhog saw his shadow so we must be getting nearer some warmer weather. Sunday started out pretty nice and gradually got colder and windier. There was a good turnout at Church, it is so nice to once again see a choir and this week there were a few more in it. Carol Gardiner was at the organ and Helen Wood accompanied the choir. The Service opened with 3 gathering hymns, "He Has Made Me Glad, Joy Is The Flag, Standing On The Promises". Rev. Black welcomed all and drew our attention to the Announcements. The Christ Candle was lit and the Hymn, "Holy, Holy, Holy" was sung. The Invitation t Worship and the Prayer of Approach were repeated followed by the hymn, "O God Our Help In Ages Past". The Prayer of Self- Examination and the Words of Assurance were followed by the Junior Choir singing, "When You Need a Friend, Pray, Pray." David then called the children forward, David was eating a cookie, he asked the children if these were the ones they made and were they good? They said yes, he then asked them if they would rather eat cookies than hamburgs, roast beef, carrots, squash or other vegetables? They said, yes. He told them that we all need cookies as well as meat and vegetables for a well balanced diet. When we go to Church we receive food for the soul. We need this as well for a well balanced life. The children's hymn was "I'm Someone Special". The Scripfure reading was Matthew 18: 1-7, 10. The Sermon was titled, "What Rev. Black said, "the other night I had a dream", I looked out the window towards the Church and Newtonville Church was gone, it was now a Canadian Tire. He got into his car and drove to Kendal, Kendal United Church was gone and in it's place stood a convenience store. David then said he drove on to Shiloh, it was just an open space. He then called Bowmanville and Oshawa and was told there were no Churches in either place. What if? there were no more Churches? Sure you could sleep in on Sundays, play golf. You would have no more working to raise funds for repairs, no more meetings to go to. But, where would you learn the ways of God? Where would you learn about ethics, right and wrong? Where would you learn about the love of God? What if you had not had parents who brought you fo Sunday School when you were young? What if there were no Churches? Who would teach the children, who would tell them about the Birth of Jesus, of how he died on the Cross for our sins? Who would tell them that God's love is there for them. Who would reach out and comfort you when a loved one dies? What if there were no Holy Days, no Christmas, no Easter, no beautiful Church music, no quiet places' of refuge? What if there were no Christian Churches to stand out as a beacon of Hope? That is what Kendal United Church is, it has stood as an island of Hope for 125 years, it has given hope, courage, it has Baptized our children, married us, it has been there to give us comfort as we lost loved ones. It has been there for us, now, we must be there for a new generation. It must be there to teach moral values, values that can no longer be taught in our schools. We have to share God's love with all the people. We must learn to change, we must learn to meet the needs of the future. The real nightmare is not that, the Church won't be there but is unwilling to change, to meet the needs of the new generations. The Church, like the school, the hotels, the businesses that once were here, will not exist. We need to be open to change or we will be left behind. The hymn, "Speak Forth Your Word" was sung followed by a beautiful taped anthem, sung by Keith Barry, "Follow In The Footsteps." The Prayer of Thankfulness and the Prayer of Concern and Commitment were given. The clqsing hymn was, "We Build A New Tomorrow". Following the Service a Pot-luck lunch was held in the CE room and then the annual Congregational meeting was held. Kendal United Church is looking to the future with plans for a nursery to make it casier for the young couples to bring their children and know that they will be safe and looked after while they are attending the Service. We have a active core of stewards and members that have been meeting on Saturday mornings at 6:30 a.m., for breakfast and Bible study and now a group of young parents are meeting on Wed. evenings for Fellowship and Bible study. Plans are underway for many upcoming events. On Sunday, February 18th a Pancake Breakfast will be served in the CE room from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. We will also be selling pies, so come on out have breakfast, join us at our Service and take a pie home for dessert. Sorry to learn of the death of another Kendal resident, Emil Huber, the Sympathy of the community goes our to the family. A fall on the ice has taken its toll on a Kirby neighbour of ours, Mrs. Loreen Bail fell on Friday and fractured her right ankle, she certainly has my sympathy and best wishes for a speedy recovery. 'Daughter has just asked to borrow mom's car, mother says ok, but I want it home by midnight". Daughter says, " But mom I'm 18." 'I know", mom replied. "But my car isn't". P.
