BOWMANVILLE TOASTMASTERS Don't be afraid to fail was the theme for our Toastmaster meeting. Its a rare occasion for lasting success to follow a first attempt. R.H. Macy failed seven times before his store in New York caught on. Babe Ruth struck out 1,330, but he also hit 714 home runs. Don't worry about failure. Worry about the chances you miss when you don't even try. Toastmasters at the head table shared their thoughts on failure. Toastmaster Irene Konzelmann Table Topics Master shared with us her philosophy that failure is only failure when you don't learn from it. Toastmaster C. Wonnacott declared that failure need not be permanent. General Evaluator Toastmaster Mike Sullivan spoke about the need to persevere even if you are judged to be a failure. He added, "the people that I admire most are those whose resolve is unfailing." The Table Topies session gave us all the opportunity to practice our listening skills. Four of the five participants were ushered from the room while the Table Topics Master read a story to the one remaining. Those who had not heard CLAnrE HiGH ScHooL Last week we ran a letter from a person who chose to remain anonyrnous about an incident at Clarke High School. Apparently, according to Clarke officials, certain facts were omitted or just plain wrong in the person's letter. Unfortunately the school is unable to clarify the situation as it is prevented from doing so by the Provincial Freedom of Information anç Protection of Privacy Act. The letter portrayed the school in a very bad light. There was also a comment on students leaving Clarke for Bowmanville High in droves. I personally would like to comment upon that. I am sure that if you looked at the history of all local schools you will see similar things have happened before. I remember when I was at St. Stephen's a horde of students transferred over from Bowmanville High. Does that mean Bowrnanville High is a bad school? No. Does that fact that Clarke lost a few students this year to Bowmanville make Clarke a bad school? No. All sorts of reasons exist for these "migrations"; unavailable courses, friends are transferring, etc. Students leaving one school for another should not be seen as a comment upon the quality of education available at a school. Rather than put the school down, maybe we should focus on all the good things that go on at the school. the story were ushered in one at a time and each consecutively repeated the story to the next. Gales of laughter shook the assembly as we discovered how each of us had deviated from and embellished the original. Area Governor Toastmaster Dave Chilvers made an informal visit to the club and heartily participated in the evenings activities. Winner of the Best Speaker trophy Toastmaster C. Wonnacott demonstrated the technique of reading a prepared speech while maintaining eye contact with the audience. Toastmaster Irene Konzelmann earned the best evaluator trophy for her insightful comments about Toastmaster Wonnacott's presentation. Come and visit us any Tuesday 7:30 p.m. to see Toastmasters in action. For more information please cal Irene Konzelmann at 983- 9423. Kendal Hall News The Men's Lodge met on Wed., Feb. 7th.
