Ororia Week[y 'limes, Wednesday, March 6,1996-5 More Money For Ice Resurfacer Facing Fears Charlie Reid presents Ray Bester with a cheque for $500. Charlie, who played minor hockey in Orono, just wanted ta give back something ta the community that has given him so- much. The Newcastle Lions Club made a very generous, dona- tion of $5000 towards the new resurfacer. Lion Ray Goode, a long-time Orono resident was chosen ta present the cheque on behaif of the Lions. Ray came prepared with a speech, which we xiii repeat here. "On behaîf of the Newcastle Lions Club, we are happy ta present you with a cheque for the Orono Amateur Athletic Associatin, to be used for the flei ice, resuirfacing machine-. 'Only one fear exists that we have no choice of facing, and thiat is death.> 1Fear 1-can taike over au lives ind par-alyze us ta the point1 of havwing nio life- at ail. Someitimel(s \we leel like a smallfri1ihtened child with aur nase pfressed against the windlow p)aneý of life, watching tue Nworld carry on without uis. Fear af failuire. Fear of suiccess. Fear of rejectian. Fear of speaking in front of groups. Fear of making wrong decisions. When 1 became a Mary Kay consultant 1 had al these fears. And 1 still do. .But 1 take pride in every moment that I feel that fear, and do it anyways!' These preceding paragraphs were the opening lines of a speech I gave before a crowd of about 100 guests and business associates a few days ago at the Holiday Inn. For the second quarter since becoming a consultant, I was 'Queen Sales' in myv area. The words 1 spoke thiat night were spoken with sincerity. Life is a journey of experiences and chaices. It is a canglomeration of lave, laughter, pain, sorrow, jay and often regrets. Wc are born with such potential and a pramising future. Fear keeps us fram achieving aur goals in life. Somnetimes it just sýlows us down. And we waste years of aur lives summoniing the- couIrage ta reach for aur dre-ams. Feaýr becomes aur biggest excuise for saying 'No' ta change of any kind in aur lives. Accetptance is swallowed inuch casier than a large dose-of fear. When I staod before that crowd of nearly 100 people, my palms went sweaty. My throat felt tight. My heart pounded laudly in my ears. 1 apened my mauth ta speak, facing my biggest fear public speaking. The applause was sincere. We had connected, bonded in my marnent of fear as my audience faced their fears withýin their own minds. The- hi-light of that evening was knowing 1 had truly touched the hearts of others and lent inspiration into a few lives. No greater gift have we to giveni the world than a part of ourselves give in that time of conquering a fear. FEAR is truly only False Evidence Appearing Real.
