s si~,,j.' ~ ,.J.<..a.p.t Orono Weekly Times, Wednesdaiv, March 27, 1996 Il 'May The Farce Be With You' From left: Producer John Maloney, Director John Amesbury at "FARCE" rehearsal. "Ahah!! The mystery is solved!" From left: Norm Smith and Ken Brignall in "Streuth". A dinner theatre perfor- mance of May The Farce Be With You - "an evening of Komic Kulture" - will be pre- sented at the Flying Dutchman Hotel, Bowmanville, on April 12,13, 18, 19, 20. The four short plays in Coarse Acting, by Michael Green, will be per- formed by the Klarington Repertory Arts Performers (K.R.A.P.), a.k.a. Bowmanville Drama Workshop. Asked why he gets a kick out of directing The Farce, John Amesbury says, It appeals to my weird sense of humour". The Farce is this director's delight because its theatrical complications make it challenging and interesting, not only for him, but also for the cast. Amesbury says the four plays which comprise The Farce are more difficult because the actors must per form the parts of actors play- ing characters. In effect, each plays a double role. Amply supplied with sight gags, bloopers and mayhem, the plays provide a wickedly infectious humour. The murder mystery, Streuth, involves a variable villain, a bilious butler, an unstoppable inspector and a canny corpse. Stalag 69 examines the plight of an English pilot determined not to reveal military secrets in a German prisoner-of-war camp, where communication barriers extend far beyond language. In Present Slaughter, the attempted reunion of two stylish lovers in 1920's France goes awry as they fight for composure. All's Well'That Ends As You Like It does just that, as a pair of star- March 19 45 members of the Bricklayers and Labourers Union out of Toronto tried to intimidate the non-union members working on the Aspen Springs project in Bowmanville. They threw bricks and pieces of wood through windows in some of the homes. One of the homes was occupied. A brick was thrown through a window, landing near a baby seat in the home. Luckily, the occu- pant had left just moments before, or the baby would have suffered serious injury. The Union members were stopped by Durham Regional Police a few minutes away from the scene. "Unfortunately, we could not charge any of them, as none of them could be positively identified," said Inspector Adams of 16th Division in Bowmanville. Three of the union members were charged which willfully obscuring their license plates with mud, a $105.00 fine. The President of the Union was contacted by the police, and was upset with what the members had done. The Union President said that crossed lovers find happiness with the help of a little super- natural intervention, Shakespeare style. What is Coarse Acting? Rudeness on stage? No - well, not intentionally. Here's an example. The Big Day is here; you've rehearsed your lines, the bridal gown is perfect, the tuxes match, you're march- ing down the aisle toward the minister. Suddenly the flower girl trips over a shoelace, and lands on the bride's train, which separates from the dress with an excruciating rrripp! The bride turns to see what's happening and promptly faints, falling face first onto the minister's shoes. Now you know what it feels like to be an actor on stage, when.unexpectedly, some- thing goes wrong. Later, when you repeat the performance (including mishaps) for those who weren't there, you've done what is known in the- atre as Coarse Acting. May The Farce Be With You demonstrated stage dis- asters of all sorts, from faulty scenery and missing props to actors' quirks and 'uncon- ventional' directing. Brief intermissions will be provided so that audience members may pick themselves up off the floor!
