Orono's defense Brent Vanstone # 11, Andrew Kadylola #10, Garrett MacDonald #12 and Mark Spiers #4 played their posi- tions with great determina- tion not allowing many shots on net. He was assisted by Brandon Fitzpatrick #2, Garrett MacDonald # 12, and Jason Campbell #6. Also scoring for Orono was Joey Konopka # 15 assisted by Joey Hill #9. Once again Kevin Martin #30 played with great skill and only allowed in one goal. Pineridge Insurance played with great effort, they applied their skills, played their posi- tions excellently and played as a team. The entire team deserves a big pat on the back. Good work guys. Clarington Boys Headed To 'AAA' Championship The Central Ontario Wolves "AAA" Minor Novices qualified for the 1996 OMHA Tournament of Championships after sweeping a best-of-five semi-final with Windsor three games to none this past weekend. The Windsor squad proved to be no match for our Wolves, who coasted to 11 - 0, 16 - O and 12 - 2 victories. The Wolves will travel to Brampton's Earnscliffe Arena for the championship tourna- ment on March 29th, 30th and 31st. They will be con- tending for the OMHA cham- pionship with teams from Whitby, Brampton, Burlington and the host team, Chinguacousy. Interested observers should check the bulletin board in the Orono Arena for game times. The Minor Novice Wolves features six boys from the Municipality of Clarington and vicinity: co-Captain Matt Mitchell and Mark Kelly are Orono residents, goaltender Jesse Francis hails from Bowmanville, Andrew Fracz and Bryan Piggott are from Courtice, and Jeff Semeszyszyn lives in Pontypool. Thank you to local sponsors, Orono Fuel & Lumber and The Apple Blossom Shop for their sup- port. Good luck boys, and keep up the Wolf attack! No Break On The Break For Apple Blossom Shop Novice The Apple Blossom Shop Novice ended up "A" Finalists in Harvey's March Break Tournament in Bowmanville. In game one on Wednesday at Darlington, Apple cruised to an 8-1 victory over Pine Ridge. Greg Dunham (11) and Dave Landman (99) scored two each while singles went to Ben Bell (20), Mike Fuller (2), Ryan Campney (93) and Derek Sellars (88). Thursday saw a three game charge to take the guys to the finals. Apple took on North Oshawa in the first game and came up with a 5- 1 win. Greg Dunham (11) notched a hat-trick and Ben Bell (20) and Ryan Campney (93) added singles. Thursday afternoon, Apple crushed Woodview Park (wherever the heck that is?) 10 to 2. Derek Sellars (88) and Greg Dunham (11) both banged in three each while Garrett Wood (66), Carl Tordiff (8), Dave Landman (99) and Ben Bell (20) added singles. Apple entered the finals with the highest point total but ran smack into a tough Bowmanville Sports Shop team and came up short. Apple's only goal was scored off a great end to end rush by Greg Dunham (11) in the third. Excellent work guys! As the team was mounting their trophies on the shelf, a call came in from the rep guys for a Friday night match. After learning a lesson from the stacked Sports Shop team, the guys knew they'd have to play every minute to stay in it - they did. They held the rep team to one goal while getting some good chances of their own until late in the third giving up a second end- ing in a close 2 0 loss. It was back to the arena on Saturday against Union Oil for Apples final league game before playoffs start. Apple came up with a solid 3-1 win despite missing one line. Goal scorers were Greg Dunham (11), Dave Landman (99) and Joseph Staples (10). Quite a week guys and a special mention to goalies Carl Tordiff (8) and Kyle Johnston (29) for a combined GAA of 2.60 over six games and to Chris Buttonshaw (9), Justin Guillemette-White (44), Colin Maitland (12) and Brandon West (3) for their stack of assists. One Down, Nine To Go For Burger King The Newcastle Bantams played their first C.R.H.L. playoff game on Thursday night and skated to a 6-4 win. First period goals by Colin Bayda from Kyle Beacock and Vince Norton and then John Armishaw carried the puck behind the Lange's Photo net and fed a perfect pass to Kyle Beacock in the slot to put Newcastle up 2-0. Kyle scored again in the second period from Vince Norton and Colin Bayda. Randy Brennan then set up John Armishaw to put the Burger Team team up 4-0. With just over a minute left in the second Chris Peldiak got Lange's on the score sheet. Five minutes into the third Colin Bayda scored from Chris McLean. Thinking this one was in the bag Newcastle eased off just a little too much. This allowed Langes to get back in the game with two goals mid way through the third. Then with less than one minute on the clock Lange's drew to within one. With the face off in Newcastle's end Lange's pulled their goalie, for the extra attacker. Steve Foster fed the puck to Chris McLean who dumped the puck out of the Newcastle end. With Lange's supporters leaning one way and Newcastle's leaning the other we watched as the puck rolled on edge towards the Lange's empty net, hitting it dead cen- tre. Our next playoff game is March 28 at 9:00 in Newcastle against Darlington Auto. Geraldi Insurance Wins Two Leafs"Hammer"'Beaver Lumber On March 23 Geraldi insurance win 8-1. Orono Leafs seem to be at the top of their game this week playing strong hockey for all 3 peri- ods. Defense was a big key - numbers 99 Jake Stockwell, 5 Matt Moffat, 39 Daniel MacIssac, 4 Michael Whelan, 88 Jesse Rice played excep- tionally well keeping the puck in Beavers end preventing scoring opportunities in our zone by Beaver Lumber. #29 Denis Beenen, Orono's goal- tender enjoyed their strong plays making his job a lot easier. Denis played an excél- lent game making great saves and covering up rebounds. Good work Denis! Nick fought hard in front of the net - chasing lose pucks he takes a nice pass from #9 Troy Webster and bangs it in. Great goal Nick!! Fifth goal by #33 Colin Kelly, assisted by #9 Troy Webster. Colin picks out far corner for his second goal of the game. Sixth goal by #7 Brandon Ernst. All alone in front of the net with all the time he need- ed for a perfect 5 hole. Nice shot! Seventh goal by #66 Robert Kay, assisted by #7 Brandon Ernst. Again some excellent passing by Brandon to Robert as he flipped a high shot off the goalie's head and into the net. That's using the old head - good puck control guys!! Our last goal unassisted was by #9 Troy Webster. Troy's stick handling abilities are pretty smooth, a fast breakaway and a nice deek made for a cool goal. Keep up the good work!
