The student body was divided on what was the prop-' er stance to take. Inside the' schooi, the majority of stu- dents tried to carry on with their usual rouitines. "The kids that stayed inside were probably protest- ing in a more constructive fashion," said McNamara. At lunch time, when many of the protesters came back inside the school, there were many heated discussions ,going on between the stu- dents, both in support of the walkout and against. Each side believed that their form of protest would get the best resuilts. Those students that hiad joined in the walkout were not punished for their momling actîvities, but faced possible suspension if they continued their -protest after lunch. "When they havethat kind of mob mentality they start to behaVe in an inap- propriate mariner ... and we have to react in a heavy- handed manner," said McNamara. -They knew the consequence by going out there," said Bob Roney, a stu- dent at the school.
