~~j~-Orono W~e~iy limes, Weclnesday, May 8,1996 Student Protests COfltinr f St. Stephen's High School in Bowmanville held a student protest on Thursday on the education cuts imposed by the Provincial Government. The well organized event included not only a gath- ering of the students, but stations where students could sign petitions, write down their ideas on where cuts could be made, andadd questions to list that will be asked of MPP John O'Toole when he speaks to the school on May 24. New LookJ Mosport Park's 36th 'con- secutive season of motor rac- ing will bring a "new look"' to Canada's Home of Motor Racing, as part of a compre- hensive program that will have a dramatic affect on almost every aspect of the track's operation. According to Bernard J. Kamin, Q.C., the track's President and CEO, there are several reasons for this com- prehensive improvements program. '-he coming expan- sions of the new Highway 407 project wilI include a major interchange that will connect to the west side of the Mosport Park property, which will of course make us much more accessible to more peo- ple," he noted. "The -other main reason for these many changes is the way the track has been looking; it looks old, which is not ail that surpris- ing, when you consider how long if's been in existence. For several years we've used what you might cail band-aîd ,maintenance - mostly fresh paint - to make the track look better. But you can only go s0 far with this type of band- aid maintenance before you've got to give things a real good facelift. Caîl it a 'new look' if you like". These changes, most of which will be completed in time for the Sunoco Ultra 94 Trans-Am Weekend (May 17, 18, 19, 20) include: *Major landscaping of the grounds, including the perimeter walls, all gate areas, and many other spec- tator areas. & Painting of the cement perimeter walls, which will also be decorated with large racing flags and race cars. - Installation of floodlight- ing in several areas: the spec- At Mosport tator gates, the Tower, the Paddock Restaurant, the Motomart area, the Registration Centre and the new Hospitality Entrance Gate. aInstallation of new vinyl cladding on the Registration Centre, the Paddock Restaurant, and the Tower. New furniture will also be purchased for both the Paddock Restaurant and the Tower facilities. -Enlarging of the paddock area, and relocation of the, VIP hospitality areas to the1 out- side of Corner one. Ail hospi- tality areas will also be 1ev- elled, landscaped, separated with white picket fences, and wilI have their own entrance way and TV monitors. *Creation of new reserved parking for Recreational Vehicles, both in the paddock (inside Corner One) and at Corner Eight. Reservations are required; a nightly fee is charged. e Designation of -a new Family Camping area, at the west end of the 720-acre Mosport Park property, near the Chrysier Gate. e Major safety improve- ments to the Corner Four area. *l Installation of a new per- manent chicane at the top of the backstraight to resolve a longstanding track safety concern. This "new look" approach at Mosport Park this season also includes a major new event (the 24 Hours of Mosport in late June), more spectator attractions (clowns at the Mosport International Speedway oval, pace car rides for the spectators) increased beer service at ail events, Mosport's Thunder AIey (a casino, video games arcade, souvenir kiosks, a beer gar- den and other spectator activ- ities), new oval track activi- lies (King of the Hill racing for the spectators and roller blad- ing), and sponsorship of the 1996 stock car programn by Tailgate Charlie's (Oshawa)., Free shuttie bus service for GO train riders and expan- sion of the popular cable TV network coverage of the Mosport International Speedway events are also planned. As in the past, there will be free camping and free music concerts at ail major Mosport Park events again this sea- son. The talented line-up for the Trans-Arn Weekend con- certs includes Jeif Healey, the Skydiggers, and the- Pursuit of Happiness, with other top entertainers to be added shortly. Tickets are available at alTicketMaster locations, fromn TicketMaster Charge by Phone (at 416-872-5000), or from the Mosport Park Office (905-513-0550) and at Tailgate Charlie's in Oshawa (905-723-8003).
