4 ýron lýeeky ïme, ýednsd<yMay 15, 191)6 The kids at Orono Public School, in conjunction with AÀrmstrong's IGA, helped beautify the down- town of Orono last week by picking up garbage around town. The students filled 43 bags of garbage (bags provided by the IGA). Here the grade fives and sixes pose with Don Armstrong and some of the garbage they collected. The first person-out there that comes to the office and points out Don Armstrong in the picture to me will receive one dollar. Another week of cool damp weather, perhaps we should ail grow web feet and fur coats. At least we had one day it felt milder and I got ambi- tious and planted pansies in front of the deck. One thing about pansies they are hardy and can stand the cool weath- er. It used to amaze me to see the pansies growing around the buildings in Vancouver, a big snow storm came and they were completely covered for several days. The flowers were still in full bloom when the snow melted. It must be because of the weather, I just can't seem to get going this "spring", it couldn't be because of age. After raining all day and night Saturday, the sun came out on Sunday but with a strong wind out of the north, it didn't warm up at all. There was a good turnout at Church, we were pleased to have the Bender's back and along with the Junior choir we had lots of music. The gathering hymns were, "This is The Day, I Arn So Glad and Stand By Me". The Christ Candle was lit, Prayers of Thankfulness and Prayers of Concern were given..,The opening hymn was "Thine Is The Glory". The Invitation to Worship and the Prayer of Approach were given, the hymn "O God of Bethel" was sung. The Prayer of Self- Exanination and the Words of Assurance given. The Youth Choir sang "Did He Pray? Yes He Did". I must say bere, these youngsters have added so much to the Service over these past weeks, I only hope that in the future they will continue to do so. The chil- dren were invited to the front, a short video clip was shown of people in China, Christian people. They need Ministers, at one time Canada sent mis- sionaries to China but now they want their own people to lead them they want their own to look after the clinics but they need help to train these people. That is where some of our M&S dollars go. David said, "Today is Mothers Day, what does that mean, what is special about it?" The children answered that it was a day to give their mothers flowers, candy, cards to show that they loved their mother. David asked al. the mothers to stand, he asked them which they would rather receive, the things that the children mentioned or, hugs and kisses? The hugs and kisses won out, they don't cost noney but they show love better than any other thing. The children's hynn was "Jesus Loves Me". The Scripture was 1 Peter 2, 3-10 and Matthew 7, 24- 27. The Sermon was titled, "The Value of Family". In 1937 the most idolized man in America was Charles Lindbergh, he was the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic. Five years later he became a bereave parent when his son was kidnapped and later found dead. The world grieved with him. Later he became an anti-war cru- sader but when war did come, he became a civilian advisor to the U.S. Govt. He died in 1974. In one of his later speeches he said, "In my youth, science was more important than either man or God. It took many years for me to discov- er that science lights only a middle chapter of creation. I saw the aircraft that I loved destroying the civiliza- tion I had expected it to save. Now I understand that spiri- tual truth is more essential to a nation than the mortar in it's city walls. When the actions of a people are under- girded by spiritual truths, there is safety. When spiritu- al truths are rejected, it is only a matter of time before civilization w7ill collapse." The psalmist said the same thing 3000 years earlier but with fewer words. "Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain". On this Christian family day, we see the erosion of the family, parents working to support their lifestyle. Children being left on their own too much. The tradition of Family is seen differently, it does not always mean two parents and the children. No matter how we define, Family, the quality of family life is deteriorating. Parents are saying that they may not get to spend, tine, with their CHILDREN, BUT THE TIME THEY DO SPEND IS, QUALITY TIME. Quality time in our homes was the time we spent with our mother, doing dishes, learning fron her or out help- ing father with chores. David said that in his home using correct English was a must and over the time spent on the dishes, that was when they learned the correct way to speak. If they made a mistake, they might have to do the dishes alone for a week, they soon learned their lessons. It was only when your par- ents started to share family anecdotes with your friends, that you knew the friends had been accepted, when they spent time talking to you and your friends. Today people tend to use fax or the internet to communicate, it is cheaper and faster, but it is not per- sonal. It is in the family that we pass on our belief in God, our faith in Hin. If you, do not have this, it shows in your children. We can treat our families as we want but we should treat each member with respect to increase the strength of all members to Know nat uoa is tne rock. There is no family, that can say, there is no trouble here. Whatever situation your fam- fly is. in, you should know, that God is always there for you. le is the rock you bild on, He can bring you hope, peace and strength and guid- ance. He is the light at the end of the tunnel. Lyle and Yvonne Bender sang, "The Family Of God and Plenty Of Room In The Family". The Offering was present- ed, the Prayer of Concem and Commitnent-was given. The closing hymn was, "We Build a New Tomorrow". Glad to learn that Tom Wilson is home and able to be out and about. Sorry to learn that Dorothy Reid (Swarbrick) is in the hos- pital, we send our wishes for a speedy recovery. Don't forget this Sat., May 18th the Church is sponsor- ing a Yard and a Salad sup- per starting at 5 pn. Following the supper there will be Gospel Music, music by the Benders and by Craig Brand.
