- ---" - 8 - Orono Wookly imes, Wednesday, May 15, 1996 "Atalanta" Performed At The Pines International The Pines Players from Pines Senior Public School recently put on a play entitled "Atalanta" at the schooL Friday afternoon saw them perform before a crowd of about 320 made up of students from Kirby, Orono and Newcastle Public Schools. The story was about a young girl who bests some of the greatest heroes around and saves the Kingdom of Calydon from a terrible boar, while championing the cause of women. Here Jason (Gleendop Preece), Theseus (Ben Koslik), Hercules (Tim Hales), Demetrius the Poet (David Guthrie), Prince Meleager (Jordan Schmahl), Atalanta (Jacqui Hurvid), King Oeneus (Matt McGlynn), Queen Mother Agatha (Melissa Leslie), Queen Althea (Claire Hodgson), and the Herald (Billy Hicks) are all present as King Oeneus decides to allow Atalanta to compete against the other heroes. Museums Day In Clarington The 18th day of May each year has been set aside by U.N.E.S.C.O. (the education and scientific committee of the United Nations) to recog- nize and celebrate the world's museums and the effort to preserve the past for the future as a precious trust. Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, this special day gives every- one time to reflect on the importance of the past and what it can teach us. Clarington's Museums will be offering free admission on the day. The Clarke Museum will be holding special demon- strations and offering the chance for visitors to receive a free one year membership to the Museum. Clarington Council has declared the 18th "International Museums Day" in Clarington. If you have. never been to one of Clarington's museums, this would be a perfect opportu- nity to take the time and experience a slice of Clarington's past. on attending. A sincere thank you is extended to the students of the Newtonville Public School from the members of the school's fund raising commit- tee for their eager participa- tion in the Skate-a-thon. Everyone is invited to attend the parent rap session entitled "Parenting" at the Newtonville Public School on Thursday May 23 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The session's facilitator will be Pat Kennedy-Harp. The Optimist Club of Newcastle Village would like to say thank you to all the children who attended the The volunteers at the Neighbourhood Police Services Office at the Oshawa Centre are pleased to present the Durham Regional Police Puppet Patrol. These volun- teers have been working on this project for over 12 months and feel that they are now ready to introduce this project to the community. The cast of nine diverse puppets consists of charac- ters which represent the peo- ple in our community, in par- ticular the police officers of the Durham Regional Police Service. These puppets can be requested to attend various community events and will be used to re-inforce childrens' awareness of the role of the police in children's lives. Later this year the puppets will be used in live produc- tions in schools in Durham Region. The puppets will be on dispIay on Tuesclay, May teen dance on Friday May loth and who donated the non-perishable food items that were given to the Clarington Food Bank. Everyone is invited to attend the Family Fun Night which will be held at the St. Stephen's High School on Friday May 24th. All pro- ceeds from the fun night will go towards the purchase of new computers and educa- tional software. The cost is $4.00 per person.
