The Clarington Concert Band delighted a small gathering of around 38 people of ail ages last Thursday night at a concert held in the Orono Town Hall. They played a wonderful collection of Italian music, as well as a Beach Boys medley. You have never heard the Beach Boys-until you have heard "Barbara-Ann" "Surfer Girl" and "California Girls" done by a live orchestra. The con- cert band can be heard practicing if you stand outside the Town Hall on Thursday nights. "No Changes To Port of Newcastle Plan say area residents Proposed changes to the Clarington Official Plan for the Port of Newcastle devel- opment have raised the ire of some local residents. Bill Daniell, head of the Kaitlin Group, approached Council a few weeks ago to see if it was possible to build coastal villas, low-rise apart- ment buildings along the southern beach on the prop- erty. The proposai was to develop the entire beachfront; a compromise to develop the area closes to the marina was agreed to be looked at. It is the development of these vil- las that has local residents so upset. Lynda MacGregor, speak- ing on behalf of the Bond Head Community Assoc- iation, feels that this course of action should not be allowed. "The most recent compromise and proposed modifications now move the coastal villas into one of the most popular public access area of the whole Kaitlin property." The area in question will contain a portion of the Waterfront Trail. The area was designat- ed as green space for the Trail and other public uses. The coastal villas will impact on this public space. Even though the compro- mise left area open for public use, MacGregor feels that this is not good enough. "There will be problems and future complaints from those resi- dents in these condominiums adjacent to public land," said MacGregor. She was also concerned that the close proximity of private dwellings might intimidate people from enjoying the beachfront. It was wondered why Council would consider changing the Official Plan so soon after it approved it. "Is it logical or rational to start requesting modifications to such an extensive, up-to-date plan which recently received your unanimous approval?" said MacGregor. Plans for a public meeting between the Kaitlin Group and the residents are under way. Residents will be able to see a plan of the entire devel- opment and what it will look like.
