As the world becomes more and more dependent upon computers and other wiz-giz gadgets, I realize just flot how much they affect what we do, but how littie I know about them. Everything it seems is computerized today. Your bis that are sent to you are complied by computers. And often they make' mistakes. Some people show up dead in the system, othersare over-charged for things, while a lucky few receive cheques for large sums of money in the mail (too bad they can't cash them). My most recent experience was on my phone bill, where the phone. company swore that 1 phoned the Northwest- Territories flot once, not twice, but six times, on the samne day, al exactly one minute apart. Since I don't know anyone in the Northwest Territories, and very few companies would make such a location their head office, I doubt that 1 was responsible for such a series of cails. You can even bank at home from your personal computer. This does have its benefits. Just think, you can fire up your hardware and pay your bill the instant it comes in. No more forgetting to go to the bank and then receiving nasty letters in the mail from your creditors. But think of ail the problems that could arise. Your whole life savings is just sîtting there in cyberspace, just waiting to be transferred by accident off to. Greenpeace or some other organization. A littie cdoser to home for me, is how dependent you become on computers at work. I was caimly sitting at home, writing ail of my articles for the newspaper, when my Powerbook suddenly went blank. No matter what I dîd, the damn thing wouldn't tumn on. Not, only were al the things I had not saved lost, but I could not even turn it back on to get at the thîngs that I had saved. At 10:00 p.m. the night before your publishing day, that can be a little stressful to say the least. So off I puttered back to the Times to power up my computer there. 1 finaily got my work caught back up in the wee hours of the momning (if anything seems rushed, or a littie confusing this week, don't blame me, blame a computer). And it is only going to get worse. Soon you will be unable to get by without a home computer of your own. You will nevèT be able to get people on the phone in big business, as more and more will come up with computerized answering services. You probahly won't even be able to drive your car in the future without telling your computer what to do. For someone who is only somewhat cotnputer literate, this possible future gives me the willies. I guess it is up to me to change. Computers are the future, wl'ether we like it or not. They are in a sense magical, allowing us access to things like neyer before. And once we get use to using them more and more, they will help a great deal. Computers hold a lot of power in their delicate plastic shelîs. It must be just fear of the unknown that scares me away from computers. Technology has long been deemed 'evil' by some, but it is only a tool. A very frustrating tool at times, but still just a' simple tool. Although only three more building permits have been issued since last year's, to date total of 180, the total value of projects undertaken is up almost $1 million. Residential increases make up the bulk of the increase, while commercial construc- tion is down. Classified Advertising Works! But Why Take Our Word For It. Place One Today.
