Paul Murdoch, 16, a member of the Maple Leaf Karate Club in Courtîce and a Bowmanville High School student, won the gold in the 60 kilogram weight class and in the open weight class and was a member of thse Ontario team which took the bronze in team fighting. Paul, who had an 11-0 record at the toumnament has been training for 10 years at Maple Leaf (he has had his black belt since lie was 12). His instructor, Charlie Kennish, a Sth degree black beît, has operated the club sifice 1982. Paul, who has competed in Hungary, Calgary, Vancouver, and the Domînican Republic in the past, will now be going to represent Canada at the Pan-Arn Games in Venezuela this âeptember. I arn going to take a break and give you one too. I have received rnany words of encouragement and thanks over these years from many of you out there. Lately what has ail this Urne been a pleasure to do, has become a chore and what with the trouble with my eye- sight for close up work, as 1 arn a hunt and peck typist, I find 1 arn spending more time erasing my mistakes than on anything else. Also my writing is getting so bad that even 1, can not read it when I get home from Church. So, thank you for your support, and who knows per- haps after a short respite over the summer, I may be back. Have a wonderful summer. Phyllfs Lowery Bowmanville Tennis Club Summer.Day Camp The Bowmanville Tennis Club is holding a Tennis Day Camp for Juniors during the week of July 8 - July -12. There will be two age groups, with a limit of 16 children in each age group. Registration fee is $60.00. The Morning Session is for ages 8 to 10 and will run from 9 a.m. to moon. The Aftemnoon Session is for ages il to 13 and will run frorn 1 p.m. to 4 p.rn. This camp is open to chil- dren who have neyer played tennis as well as those who have already been introduced to the game. The fee includes the cost of instruction, court time, refreshments, practice balis and a t-shirt. Chiîdren must have their own racquets and non-mark- ing tennis shoes. Michael Meeks led Canisius College to the 1996 NCAA Toum-ament, is the 1996 MAAC Most Valuable Player and is entered in the 1996 NBA draft. The free clinic will include a free autograph session. On Thursday, June 27, 1996, Canadian Harness Driver Doug Brown will host the 2nd Annual Doug Brown Celebrity Golf Toumnament at Thunderbird Golf Club in Whitby. As in 1995, the net proceeds from this fund-rais- ing event will be forwarded to the "Children's Fund"ý of the Children's Aid Society of Durham Region. The Children's Fund provides Christmas hampers and sum- mer camp registration to chul dren in need, and supports two particular children in their athletic pursuits (com- petitive swimming and karate). Celebrities already con- firmed include NHL players (current and alumni), Leon Hatzinonou (Argos), media personalities (television, radio and press) and Harness greats. For those not farniliar with the name "Doug Brown," he has been awarded as Canada's leading Harness Driver in seven of the last eight years, has driven hors- es to more than 6,300 wins and total purse eamnings of over $57,000,000, ranking him ninth and seventh in those categories. He has also been a lifelong resident of the Durham Region. This Tournament is an excellent opportunity for the community to support Doug's, work for children in Durham Region. The many tacets of "SUC- CESS" formed the theme for Chairman Toastrnaster Dowj's meeting of May 28. The consensus was that success wasn't a destination but an ongoing process. Her presentation earned her the best speaker trophy. The hierarchy of support for the International Toastmaster program was explained by President Toastmaster Connie Nelson.
