Construction Wrecking Ha..lv oc Oln Local, Merchants Bowmanville merchants expressed their concern over the construction that is slat- ed along Hwy. #2 from rank St. to Ontario St. Linda Moore of M&M Meat Shop and Rudy Van Wijngaarden of Sugar's Bakery made a presentation to Council highlighting their concemns. Highest on their lists was thie impact that con- struction and subsequent traffic restrictions have on their businesses. This includes the inability of cus- tomers to access their shops, but also problems associated with delivery trucks unable 10 get through. One merchant, the Petro Canada near the A&P, sent a letter to one of the Councillors that he is being forced bo close his busi- ness for good because the construction has s0 seriously impacted upon his business that he risks bankruptcy. The presentation included a varîety of proposals in which the Municipality could help the merchants during the construction. Monetary compensation in the form of tax relief during this period, advertisements letting the community know which busi- nesses are affected the most by the construction, and a summer student hired by the municipality 10 help keep store fronts clean during the period were ail included in thie presentation. Council, which referred thie report 10 the Municipal staff, were generally supportive of the merchants. "I didn't real- ize how concemned the mer- chants were. Ail those mer- chants have been suffering in silence," said Councillor Carson Elliott.- "We have to go the extra mile," added Mayor Diane Hamre. Councillor Ann Dreslinski, recently returned to work afler a brief time in hospital, brought a different problem to the table. Presently the officiai detour for thie site goes down Prince St., right past the hospital emergency entrance. "There is no way an ambulance can gel in," said Dreslinski. It's an abso- lute disaster." Mayor Hanire referred the problem 10 Stephen Vokes, Head of Public Works for the Municipality. He highlighted that the project is being undertaken in four phases. The present phase should be done in about two weeks. Phase 2 is on Hwy. #2 from Liberty to Brown Streets. Mr. Vokes assured Council that everything would be done 10, try and make the impact as small as possible on the mer- chants. I arn not sure that I hear we are recognîzing this is a major problem," said Hamre in spite of Vokes assurances. agêvertising Ises net ceSt yeU. iiene y it riakes yOu. riiney On May il the Orono Sr. Cees held their meeting and card party.
