- -( 4 - ýOrorio Weely Tirne,Wdedy ue2,19 Mr. & Mrs.ý John- Clapdorp of Orono and Mr. & Mrs. Peter Lugtenburg of Bowmanville would like to announce the forth- comîng marriage of their children Stephanie and Doug. ,Marriage to take place on August 2, 1996. From Parliament Hi!! Alex Shepherd We've ail heard if said that a chain is as sfrong as ifs weakest link. Tis applies f0 the bonds of nationhood f00. l know Canadians are weary of consfitufional dis- cussions. 1 share your frus- tration wafching egos getting i n the way of achieving con- stitutional change whîch can strengthen national bonds. Canada'1s great geographi- cal diversity, ifs linguistical and cultural differences requires tolerance. Commion Canadians like you and 1 have the important role of resisfing bickering and petty power struggles prac- ficed by polificians at al 1ev- els. The recent First Ministers Conference reflects how low some polificians will stoop f0 get media coverage while bac- rificing Canada's nationhood., Take the National Securities Commission as an example. Somewhere in his- tory if was decided securifies and commercial law were provincial .jurisdictions. Mavbe if ail made sense 129 years ago. Now Canada is the only major industriallized country wifhouf a national securities exchange. .That means if a new high tech firm wanfted f0 list in Canada f0 aftract investors if would have f0 do soin each province. Many Canadian high tech firms simply lisf on NASDAQ in the United States. The resuit is the Amnericans end up owning them along wifh the technology and the jobs. So much for creating high ftech and high paying jobs in Canada. Now British Columbia is upset about federal control in the West Coast fishery. That province's new pre- mier is clenching his fisf and stomping his feet like any two or three-year old who wants f0 gef his own way. British Columbia has even said if won't go on a Team Canada trade mission f0 Asia. Ironically that province has the most f0 gain from the mis- sion. Now if fhat's not cutting off your nose f0 spite yourF face. Devolution of power; thaf's the new termn used in refer- ence f0' the federal govern- ment giving power f0 the provinces or, as the provinces would have Canadians think, what if is the federal goveru- ment should be doing for the provinces. Canada is the most highly decentralfzed federation in t he world. Hiow far do you go before you no longer have a nation? 1 don't get any constituents phoning or writing me saying we need more devolution of power. This kind of nonsensé is a politician's gamble. A crap shoot one might say. But the stakes are high because if could lead f0 the. destruction of Canada. Examples such as educa- tion standards between provinces, inferprovincial trade - talk f0 a trucker - or the cost of medîcal insurance for people traveling to B.C., emphasizes that devolution of power is akin f0 the execu- eqtw"t NICOLE JACKILYN FRENCH Roger & Janet of Kendal are pleased to announce the gradua- tion of their daughter Nicole Jackilyn French from Queens University, Kngston May 25, 1996 with ber Bachelor of Nursing Science. Mvemorial Hospital After Hours .01mbni Memorial 1 lospit ,al olficials, have announced that Clarington's f irst after hours clinie wiIl open this September. The MHB After Hours Clinic will be situated on Hospital property in a building fhat once served as a nurses' residence, -'We're very pleased f0 be ollering this important service to our communify," says Hospital, CEO, Tom Schonberg. "Nof only will if provide needed access to the services of a farnily physician, if will also give some relief f0 the Hospital's Emergency Departmient." Doctors' offices in the Clarington municipality presently have limited extend- ed hours. As a resuit, people needing f0 see a doctor after hours usuially have f0 go ouf of town f0 a clinic, or use Memnorial H-ospital's emergen- cy rnom. Cases which are not of a true emergency nature (such as colds or cuts) wait in MHB's Emergency Department along with those suffering fromn more serious conditions. Since very seri- ous cases are seen before more minor problems, wait- ing times can be significant for non-urgent cases., "The MHB After Hours Clinic will improve commu- nity access to non-emer- gent/urgent services," says Mr. Schonberg, "and will also allow us to, service patients in a more timely fashion during peak evening hours. ", Dr. Leon Irish, President of MHB medical staff, acknowl- edges the need for the clinic and says medical staff are supportive of the venture, Renovations are presently underway at the building. which is located at the north east corner of the Hospital. The clinic will be located on the first floor. Inifially, it will be staffed by a doctor and a receptionist over the hours of 5pm f0o 9pm, Monday to Friday. Weekends xii see the clinic opening for four hours both Saturday and Sunday. Further details will be released as the renovation proceeds. Recycle. LidYP0,tbomogh 115 GANARASKA Rd.
