Chief Justin Dubin is cenducting an inquiry iiife the maîpractice funid and the $1 billion reserve. Most professienals pay their own professional lia- bilify insurance. Many d.c- tors are pleased thaf their premiums are beingpaid, especia ily the obstefricians who were expected te pay $23,340 for this insurance. The OMA and the Minister of Health are again discussing health care issues. Mr. Lowden has assured me hie would ensure thaf agriculture issues are considered along wif h fair- ness for senior cifizens on fixed incomes in any changes te the assessmenf sysfem. The Minister of Education announced $4 million te fund distance learning. This involves computer and video lectures and credit courses at college and university level. Today, we hear se much about the Internet as well as educational videos. 1 am con- fident this step will help peo- pie in remote areas or with other access problems. 1 met with Durham College officiais this past week te discuss access and skiiis. The Ontario Secondary Schnol Graduation Diplema (OSSD) and Grade 12 equtvalency is a smail problem. Hewever, today many employers demand the grade 12 055 Diploma. I hope we cari iron eut these bureaucratic prob- lems. In my opinion, we must remove the barriers that pre- vent people from getting jobs. What is very important today is a good work efhic along with relevant training. We are se fortunate te have Gary Polonski and a great teamn of educators at Durham College. You cari take college, univer- sity or other skilis training right here in Durham. Today, each one of us must keep up- to-date with a provi nce and indeed a world that has become se focused on quality and ceost. This week marks the last week the legislature sits until September. We will be sitfing until midnight every night discussing some of the legis- lation before we go te com- mittee during the summer. I will be participating on a cou- ple of committees during pub- lic hearings. The bis deai with labeur legisiatien, edu- cation and municipal issues.
