This year marks George IV's 4th year in the enter- tainment industry and lis 36th year as a member of the Grand Ole Opry. He is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nasliville with more than 60 album releases to lis credit. Among lis more popular lits are A Rose And A Baby Ruth, Truck Drivîng Man, Breaký My Mind, Slie's A Little Bit Country, Early Morning Rain Steel Rail Blues, and Abilene. SGeorge lias recorded seven albums of entirely Canadian material and was presented witli a Juno award in 1972 for "outstanding contribu- tions to Canadian music" mhaking him the only American to be lionoured in this manner. In 1974 lie was norninated for a Juno award for "Best Country Album" and "Best Country Single". For seven years le hosted lis own national TIV programn in Canada as well as making regular guest appearances on programs like the Tommy Hunter Slow and Opry North. Now best known as a coun- try singer with lis roots in the pop music of the 50s, George IV also lias a long association with gospel music. In 1989 lie was awarded a Dove award by the Gospel Music Association for "outstanding services to gospel music by a secular artist". Althougli stilî on the road many weeks of the year -- lie just returned from a six- month tour of Great Britain last week -- George, IV lis as active in lis home congrega- tion as possible and encour- ages others to do likewise. George Hamilton IV is a country gentleman in' the strongest sense and his down to earth approacli to country stardom has made him a liousehold name alilover the world. Biliboard Magazine lias called him "the interna- tional ambassador of country music." George is equally proud of lits opportunities to share the Christian gospel wherever lie performs. Born and raised in Winston Salem, North Carolina, George attended the University of North Carolina where lie recorded A'Rose And A Baby Ruth in 1956 wliicli soon became a million- selling "gold" record. Other bits like Why Don't They Understand and The Ten Commandments of Love as a "Teen Balladeer" followed. For tliree years lie toured witli Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent and the Everly Brothers and worked closely witli people like Paul Anka and Jolinny Nash, even appearing on Broadway witli Louis Armstrong. In ,1959 George IV moved to Nashville and made a con- certed effort to establisli him- self in country music -'- lits first love. This was considered a fairly radical move in those days and it was the first time an established pop act liad "gone country". Many people questioned the wisdom of lis decision. ConwayTwitty, Jerry Lee Lewis, Billy "Crash" Craddock and others later fol- lowed suit. George joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1960 and began a recording career at RCA with Chet Atkins. A string of coun- try lits resulted in lis induc- tion to the -sidewalk ofthe stars" at tlie Country Music Hall of Fame. George IV is one of few performners of any genre wliolias liad lit records in eacli of five consecutive decades: 505 througli 90s.
