Ontario teachers honour North umberlandlClari ngton school bus driver Charles Ivatt, a school bus driver from Cobourg, was honoured August 13 by the Ontario Public School Teachers' Fedieration (OPSTF). In a province-wide competi- tion sponsored by the Federation's Awards Committee, Ivatt was named as School Bus Driver of the Year. The Award Was pre- sented at a special luncheon held at the Ottawa Congress Centre. The event was part of OPSTF's Annual Assembly, held August 12-15 in Ottawa. "Charles was nominated for this award by OPSTF Northumberland-Clarington District," Reg Ferland, President of OPSTF, told 400 luncheon guests. "The nomi- nation was supported by let- ters from school- principals who recognized the wonder- fui job Charles did, not only in driving the bus, but also in managing his, passengers. OPSTF alsoheard fromn par- ents who were grateful for Charles' level of concemn for the well-being of their chul- dren." "Charles' 28-year career as a sehool bus driver has been exemplary," Ferland contin- ued. "His bus rarely had any problemas with discipline. The blidren respected his quiet but stcmn and fair manner. It was flot unusual for Charles to retum to sehool with a for- gotten lunch or school bag. It was flot unusual for him to make special arrangements to ensure the safety or comfort of a child. It was common- place for himi to return to sehool to pick up a student who had missed the bus." "As Peter Chrisomalis, Principal of Percy Centennial Public School said in his let- ter of endorsement: In the many conversations I had with Charlie over the years, I wasalways struck with the posit ,ive attitude hie had towards life. Fie almnost always was smiling and laughing and couldfind the silver lining in the clouds. He was part of the transportation solution in the school. Whether it was in helping to change the route each year as the junior kindergarten 'students entered sehool, or solvmng the overcrowding problem, he was always part of the teani. "As hie enters his well- earned retirement, OPSTF' is pleased to name Charles Ivatt as School Bus Driver of the Year," Ferland concluded. The Ontario Public School Teachers' Federation repre- sents 32,000 members and is an Affiliate of the Ontario Teachers' Federation.
