(8 - Orono 0Weelkly Tim es,Wensaepebr8196 , Birothers Holds Raîny Day Yard Sale BIG BROTHE +0-623-6& Big Brothers of Clarington held a yard sale Saturday at their offices on 5cugog Street in Bowmanîville. Despite the rain, they had a-, very good tu ,mout and managed to raise some money to help with their organization. Look for the Big Brothers at Archibald Orchards this Saturday, September 21. From Parliament HIII Alex Shepherd, M.P. Durham Despîte the World Cup of Hockey resuits last Saturday night one thing is clear to me from watching_ the game. Canadian patriotism is stîli alive and well in Montreal. And it is here in Durham Riding too. Officials with Heritage Canada report this constituency is in third place in Ontario in the One In A Million Flag Challenge (5,700 have been ordered).' That's a lot of subscribers for the Canadian Flag and everyone of you is to be con- gratulated. I apologize for the delay some of you are experi- encing getting the flag but dLemand has been over- whelming. SIt must have been alarming for Mr. Bouchard to be watch- ing Saturday night eh. Is his language police checking to see if the cheers from Team Canada were in English or French? 1The difference between Mr. Bouchard and Teami Canada is that the Englis h and French players recognize each other's abilities and weld- them into a force that took the teamn to the finals. That make s this team a reflection of the real challenge facing Canadians. French and English have got to rec- ognize the benefits each gives to Canada. And the flag symbolizes this. If Canada fails it will reflect people's inability to get along in th eworl d as a whole. Years ago, before Nixon finally recognized mainland China, ping pong was used as a guise to create harmonious relationships between the U.S. and Chinia. At the time it was called ping pong diplo- macy. It's pathetic to hear Mr. Bouchard say the constitu- Hion is not binding in Quebec. While Quebec didn't sign the Constitution Act 1982 they were a major partner in the creation of Canada and the British ýo'rth America Act. What separatists are say- îng is that when the rules are against thema they choose to ignore the rules. Mr. Bouchard therefore believes he cari ignore the rule of law. And if youi ignore the rul of law on constitutional mat- ters what does this mean for minorities in Quebec? Wasn't this the logic that sta rted the conflict in the former Yogoslavia? We have to tiy and resist totalitarian vews such as Mr. Bouchard's.-' Mr. Galganov, who is fight- ing for English language rights in Quebec, maybe over zealous but he has the right, to his views. It' s interesting to observe the reaction of the separatists to him. Would they, if they h ad the power to-do so, silence hlm. Then there is the charges laid against some of those who helped organize last year's Montreal RalIy. Frm one of the organi.zers who is still at large. And remember the vote tampering during the referen- dum? This is seen as a minor misdemeanor by the Quebec govemnment while unity ral- lies are a hideous crime. As painful as our loss Saturday night to the Amiericanis was we all adhere to thie concept of fair play and the need to be judged by mnutually recognized stan- dards. .Maybe it's time for Canada to enter the age of hockey diplomacy and celebrate our strength through diversity within our -nation. Yes we have to meet the separatists head on but we have to use the vitality of both French and English to do away with the menace. Let's make sure there are no more shots on goal. And take heart, Canada won the world series twice.
