Perspectives From August 17 -23, 1996, The Co-operators organized a unity project aimed at increasing the understanding of Canada as a country, as well as ongoing Canadian issues. The project brought together 100 Canadian youth (ages 18 - 21) to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of Canada and the value of being Canadian. Through a series of work- shops, discussions and inter- active games, the conference provided a forum for the youth to explore, express, and listen to diverse views on Canadian unity. "Throughout this past week we hoped the partici- pants would learn something about their country, their peers and in the process, maybe learn something about themselves", said Maurice Campeau, board member of The Co-operators. The Youth Unity Conference was not a forum aimed at reaching consensus or solution, but rather was an exploration event to make the youth across Canada appre- ciate the diversity and com- plexities of the issue and our country. As Jeff Conrad, del- egate from Moncton, New Brunswick stated: "The peo- ple around us are usually experiencing similar difficul- ties to our own, only by lis- tening attentively can we help each other resolve them." Throughout the week, many issues were discussed and a variety of new ideas were pre- sented. While the group did not agree on every issue, they did become more aware of the situation existing in the rest of Canada. The Co-operators is a group of Canadian companies focusing on insurance which also provides financial secu- rity products, property devel- opment and management and investment counselling ser- vices. Co-operators General Insurance Company is the largest, wholly Canadian owned property/casualty insurer and provides insur- ance protection for over two million Canadians. Together with its subsidiary and relat- ed companies, The Co-opera- tors employs close to 4,000 people across Canada.
