r' vr' 2- Oýrono Wýeekly Týimes, WedJnesday, September 25, 1996 RODEO DA YS Orono was the home once again for the Ontario Rodeo Championships, brought to usonce again by the Bowmanviîle Rotary -and Kinsmen Clubs. Entering its third year, the rodeo was deemed a success in spite of the rain that dampened the field. This was my first ever rodeo. Last year at thi s time I was on my honeymoon in sunn-y Florida, 50 I missed out on the event. I have mixed feelings about the whole day. The rodeo is a great asset to, Cîarington, and goes aîong way in promoting our munîcipality.. It brings people to town who might not otherwise have come to Clarington, and if the champknships are continued to be held here, it will be one of thxe main draws to Claiington. What I can't understand is the whole appeal of- a rodeo., I mean 1 was standing there, watching these people falfing off rather large animais that did not want them on their backs. Many participants limped off the field and sat tixeir in obvious pain, onîy to get back up on another animnal. One competitor was savagely thrown against the fence- and repeatedly mun into by the- horse hie was on flot two feet away. His screams of pain were unnerving to say the least. Now I can see the spectators desire to see a rodeo, but I for one admit, that I arn a wimp. I could not see dragging myself on to these animais and risk miy neck for eight seconds just to say I rode that animal. I guess there are tw o types of people, those that like rodeos and those that don't. It definitely did not have the saine appeal that the fair dîd. But obviousîy many people like watching rodeos, based on the number of people that were wiîîing to sit in fihe ramn and watch it. I wiîl admît there was a certain something about it, an excitement. I couîd see how the r/l1 (RONO OWEEKLY TniES Produced Weekly By Sonbon Publîshîng Publications Mail Registratiorn No. 0368 Publishing 47 Issues Annually at the Office of Publication 5310 Main Street~, P.O. Mr. Storey's "The- Red Fox" and Audrey Stewart's "Kindred Spirits" were chosen by the artists and people at the show as being one of the best. People vote for thei r favourites and the top ten pieces were decided on who had the most votes. 1Audrey Stewart recently won an award at the Buckhorn show with "Kindred Spirits" and was on the shoiv'The Imaginal Tree" with Janet Coates, a Roger's Cable production talking about her award winning painting and gîving-some pre- show publicity for the Camp Samac event. Mr. Taylor_ believes that the Municîpality has allowed Mosport to build its presenit facilities without adequiate parkinig. Mayor Dianie Hamire feit thiat the parking lot -îsis an ttempItto Taylor feit that the pre2sent- ly accepted Officiai Plans of the Municipality and the Region should not be, ammended. "It is important for us to look back at the Durham Region Officiai Plan and the Clarington Officiai Plan. A parking -lot is con- trary to these plans." "Our association is opposed to this application. We ask Council to not permit any further parking on the property." Mosport is allowed tohold- concerts on their site accord- ing to a court ruling. The Municipality is powerless to prevent this as long as Mosport follows the Municipalities Special Permit Licencing guidelines. Mosport used land off its site for parking during Edenfest. Land off site was needed because the land on site was required to house the sheer numbers of people that camped out-for the concert. The, application cannot continue without an, ammendent to the Officiai Plan. Until Mosport complies with this, the topic is a dead issue.. Council, however, seemed to accept the plan in theory as it now stands. "If we don't approve this, where are ail those cars going to park?" asked Mayor Hamre. 1I have a very real fear of that traffic plugging up our road systems. They have to-park somewhere." Mr. Taylor's premise that by forcing Mosport to locate its parking on its present site, that the size of events could be limited was looked at with some skepticism. "It is very difficuit to put a limit on the amiount of people at an event," said Councillor Larry Hannah. "Here is a prime opportunity to resolve some of these problems and. we should not just blot it out," added Hannah. rodeo could get into your bîood. Maype that's why people are willing to, risk life and îimb to get Dack up on that horse, back up on that bull. I am sure th@re was more than one kid in that audience looking anid watching- and dreaming of someday duplicating what these people, who seem larger than life and as tougfi as nails, do summer after summer. And like any other sporting event, people do it for t he competition, for the right to say they are the best. That also can make you drag your sore and bruised body back up on a half- ton animal. Bail players play bail, hockey players play hockey, and rodeo performers ride broncos, or bulîs, or rope 'calves from'horseback.' They do it because that is wvhat they d(,. So niaybe the rodeo doesn't appeal to me. But it does appeai to a lot of others. One only has to look at the success of thé1 Calgary Stampede, and now our own rodeo, to see that. 1 think everyone shouîd go to at least one rodeo in their life, and decide for themseîves.
