4 - Orono weekly Times, Wednesday, September 25. 1996 Celebrates 50th Wedding Anniversary Bruce and Enid Tennant celebrated their 5Oth wedding anniver- sary with friends and family at the Oddfellows Hall in Orono on Saturday. The couple were married at the Orono United Church on September 21, 1946. Bruce was a long time employ- ee of General Motors of Canada while Enid worked with the Forestry. When asked for his advice on staying together so long, Bruce replied, "Whenever you fight, just walk away." Who can argue with 50 years of success. Staying In Touch John O'Toole, MPP Durham East The Fall Session of the Ontario Provincial Legislature convenes on Tuesday September 24th. I will be driving to Queen's Park Monday through Thursday each week and available in my constituency office every Friday. If you or any group wishes to meet with me in the evening, I am available after 8:00 p.m. If anyone has a suggestion of where I could meet with people in Scugog, please cal my office. I do not wish to spend taxpayer's money for accommodations but I am interested in meeting in any church, school, seniors centre residence or other facility. Of course, I would assist with any expenses incurred. Please keep in mind, that it is my duty to meet with any group or indi- vidual to listen to their con- cerns and help them under- stand the issues and policies their governrnent is dealing with. I am pleased again this session, to have a legislative page. Jackie Bakker, a grade 8 student at Knox Christian School in Bowmanville, has won this privilege. If anyone wishes to find out more about this program or how to apply, please call my office. A visit to the Ontario Legislature is an interesting experience. If you are trying to think of an inex- pensive outing for a group or as an individual, I would encourage you to call My office, we would be pleased to assist you and indeed greet you at Queen's Park. Ontario has a wonderful history that is well explained as part of the tour of the beautiful "Pink Palace," Queen's Park. The government caucus met at the plowing match in Haldimand-Norfolk, on Tuesday with caucus briefin- gs on Wednesday. Each min- ister outlined the legislative calendar for the next session. I have been in conversation with the Minister of Natural Resources, the Hon. Chris Hodgson about the Orono Tree Nursery. I am sure that most residents will be pleased that over 1,000 acres will be held by the province. I will keep the municipality informed as the Ontario Realty Corp. develops plans for the remainder of these holdings. I also had private discussions with the Minister of Health on hospital issues as well as the Minister of Transportation on other pressing issues. This session will be a challenge, as we move forward with legislation on the Municipal Act, the Development Charges Act, the GTA or Crombie "Who Does What Panel". Other pressing challenges include education funding, curriculum, educa- tion governance, post sec- ondary education reforn, jus- tice health and housing discussions. We have completed about half our spending reduction plan and we can expect fur- ther reductions and changes in priority. I asked the Minister of Finance, the Hon. Ernie Eves, if grants and transfers would be across the board and he assured caucus that performance to provin- cial targets would certainly be considered in this round of grant reductions. Durham Region and Manvers Township, which make up my riding, have certainly worked hard to manage the past reductions. We are still spending approximately $800,000.00 per hour more than we take in as revenue. By the way, most of this is interest on our $100 billion debt. This weekend has been busy. I attended the Lindsay Fair, the Courtice Community Care Centre sod tuming, the Ontario Rodeo Finals at Orono, the Terry Fox Run for cancer, the Ganaraska Conservation Authority's 50th anniversary and the honoring of Jim Shaw at the opening game for the Bowmanville Eagles. I often feel very hum- bled at these events when I speak with all the volunteer organizers who make com- munity activities work. We elected people get the stage but we are really just there out of respect for the organi- zation. On Thursday September 19th, I attended the Human Resources Professional Association of Durham's opening ceremony for their Employer Resource Centre in Oshawa. As Ontario moves toward small businesses and more individuals working for themselves, we need these resources more than ever. At my constituency office, we have a business kiosk with many helpful brochures. On Friday, I taped my Rogers Cable Show on the subject of work for welfare or Ontario Works. This is a fun- damental change in philoso- phy. We are moving from an entitlement approach to a sit- uation where social assis- tance will serve for a short term emergencies rather than a substitute for a job. My Rogers Cable Show is record- ed every second week and is seen on Cable 10 on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and Monday at 7:30 p.m. If any community group would like to bring for- ward a subject for discussion, please call my office at 697- 1501 or long distance 1-800- 661-2433 or on the internet address: Is Education Worth Paying For? By Rachel Jackson It seems education today is stuck in a difficult position. It is a no win situation. It's very depressing to think how education today is no more valuable than a lump of coal. I've always thought taxes were suppose to cover school costs but if so how come in almost every class, there is some sort of fee. For example in any computer course, art/music or outdoor Ed etc, you must pay a basic cost to even enter the class. Even in courses like English, math and science there are trips to pay for which cannot be missed since they count towards your mark. It is total- ly ridiculous. Especially with today's economy to be raising johno'toole@ontla.ola.org As I think of the changes in how we do things in Ontario, I am often confronted by those who want things to stay the way they are. I have watched my family grow and my community grow and nothing stays the same. We all long for the good old days, but I think that is because we already know the outcomes. An optimist is one who puts a favourable construction on actions and events. Yes things are changing and we must work together opti- mistically for a better future. "One who lacks the courage to start has alreadyfmnished". costs is unreasonable. Then there's after high school when you move onto what is suppose to be some great opportunity but kids just aren't going today. Whether it's College or University the costs are not worth the while. It is said that you pay for this education so that you can get a higher paying job to beat out the competition. Eventually it is suppose. to all work out but today you pay an arm and a leg for your diploma just to figure out that there is no work available. So you take on a part-time job to pay off that loan you bor- rowed to go to school in the first place. Leaving you no better off just more in debt. Society expects us to go to school and find jobs but how do we do this when the costs keep going up and employ- ment opportunities are going down? It's a sad fact but I see it everyday among my friends and school mates. I'm not saying to give up on school but we are the future and if we don't get a break then society will never advance. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SGet ARegular Score Four 1 F~" iiiir Footong Sub $ 9 Regular Footlong When You For OnlyY h f o r :Your Choice of any four regu- Buy Another Footlong of When you lar 6" subs four small bags I 1 Equal or Greater price and a Buy Another Footlong Sub of chips and four medium Medium Drink of Equal or Greater Price. drinks for oly $929 Limit: One coupon per customer Limit: One coupon per customer Limit: One coupon per customer per visit.
