Manyý people enjoyed this sunny cool day as Dave Wyrman, of Courtice, took 1 st place in the Adultrcat-' egory with a pumpkin weighing 593.5 pounds. The children's category (14 years and under) was won by Jason Middleton of Garden Hill, with help from his brothers, James and Jerrey. Jason's pumpkin weighed -in at 303 pounds, our weighing his father's by 8 lbs. The smallest pumpkin entry weighed in at 142 grams. This event was sponsored by the Co- op with some great prizes given away. Bowmanville Actors Reach The Big Screen Two Bowmanvffle film stars will be seen around the conti- nent starting this Friday, October LI. Bongo and Caesar, two of Bowmanville Zoo's lions starred in the movie "The Ghost and The Darkness" a movie starring Michael Douglas and Val lmer. The movie was shot earlier this y ear in South Africa, and the Bowmanville lions were just two of six that were used in the movie. The movie is based on the true life events about two lions that went on a man-eat- ing rampage that claimed over 130 lives in 1I896. Nothing like thîs had hap- pened before and it hasn't happened since. The two seemingly invincible beasts brought Britain's plans for an East Africa railway f0 a dead hait. In a sense,-these two lions managed to haît the continued on page 2 By isabelle Challice A gala event took place in' Manvers Arena Saturday evening'October 5, whien a very large crowd of friends, neighbours and relatives of Mrs. Gladys Brown (formerly long time Orono resident) gathered to celebrate her 8th birthday! Rick Neal, from Pontypool, a nephew of guest of honor was the M.C. for the program. Her daughter Eveline and husband Steven Bark hosted the event. The Melotones Band (local) supplied music for dancing and Mac Ransberry provided "Calling Off" for-square danc- ing. A delightful program of professional entertainers, Lyn Brown, Male Soloist, a nephew of guest of honor; a large group of Scottish dancers provided a great varn- ety of Scotish dances. The Country Fair (local quartette) as usual provided delightful harmony! A lady friend -of Gladys as guest soloist, pro- vided excellent singing and closed hier selections with a very old favorite "Amazing Grace", with audience joining in! We ail remember Gladys own musical entertainment throughout this area, and imagine she again gave out that old favorite "Won't You Corne Home Bill Bailey?" to a thunderous applause of audi- ence. Beautiful hall decorations, gifts, flowers & cards, attest- ed to hier honor, and popuflar- ity. A very large crowd of Orono folks in attendance at this happy event. Best Wishes Gladys from us al! Look May No Hands...11 Pie Eating Champion, Matt Flowers, eh... cleaned up in the Newcastle Faîl Festivals Pie Eating Contest. The crowd enjoyed sunny weather and numerous activities throughout the day.
