8 Orono eelkly Time, ednesday. October q9, 1996ý (Dcn-RCý L LTU nRL SOCETVFÀLL SHOW)V Et Y0 ÀL CF1IAA IfS The beautîful autumn colours were evident among the -floral displays at the Orono Horticultural Fal Show at the Orono United Church on October 3. President Shelley wel- comed those present and Doreen played the piano for the singing -of 0 Canada. Secretary Isabelle and trea- surer Flora gave their respec- tive reports. Guest speaker Jim McWilliams, an active mem- ber of the Canadian Chrysanthemum and Dahlia Soci etywas introduced by borna. Very knowledgeable on this topie, Jim explained the growing of dahlias from planting to winter storage of tubers. Heathy dahlia plants require a good supply of humus, compost and water and at least, three feet of space per plant. Also, the more you cut dahlias, the more sets of bloom you get. Some varieties have blooms fourteen inches in dfiameter, Jim brought-many varieties of dahlias in -an array of soli d and variegated colours from his garden for display. No doubt, afte'r viewing these lovely dahlias more of our members now have the incen- tive to cultîvate dahlias in their gardens next spring. The- 1 Sth Nationai Dahlia Show was held in September, 1996 in Stafford, England. Jîm and his wife Joan attend- ed this massive dahlia show (over one thousand exhibitors) and even took dahliai blooms from their gar- dens to the show. We viewed slides of this impressive show and it was difficuit to coin- preh end niot only the show magnitude but the many vari- eties, sizes and colours of dahlias. Our guest speaker was thanked by Isabelle for a most informative, enjoyable presentation. The lunch committee served a tasty lunch. Viewing of the show classes and visit- îng concluded an enjoyable meeting. Mark your calendar for December 5, for the Christmas show, annual meeting and pot luck supper commencing at 6:30 p.m. at Orono United Church. Members are asked to donate mîttens, hats, scarves for the Mitten Tree and non- perishabie food items for the Salvation Army. Once again, membership available at meetings. Al Welcome.
