The theme for this year's event is "The Future Is R's - Make it Toxic Free... Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!" The week long cam- paign aims to increase Ontario's awareness of the need to reduce. reuse, recycle and to reinforce the idea that individ- uais can make a difference to their local environment. Waste Reduction Week is an annual project of the Recycling Council of Ontario, a non-prof- it environmental advocacy group dedicated to educating the various sectors of Ontario society about waste mmîimiza- tion. Each year hundreds of munîcipalities, citizens, busi- nesses and industries organize activities to strengthen aware- ness concerning thevolume of waste which we collectively gen- erate. These activities help instill a sense of individual responsibility in solving the garbage problem. Peter Watson, Manager of Waste Reduction at The Region of Durham said, "If we're gomng to divert 50% of our waste from landfill by the year 2000, every- one ill have to participate." In each of Durham Region's eight municîpalities, special events, contests, draws and dis- plays for Waste Reduction Week are coordinated by municipal staff and volunteers from the community. Durham Region, itself, offers free promotional material (brochures, factsheets, posters, videos, and displays) on ail of the waste reduction programs currently offered in Durham Region.
