In this article I published the littîe girls naine in my article about last weeks kidnapping. I would just like to send my deepest apologies to anyone 1 may have offended especially to the family for any embar- rassment I may have caused. Before 1 wrote that article I read one about the Issue frm another paper where the girls naine was also stated so with- out thinklng I also wrote it. I arn very new at this business and there are some things I still have to learn, that being one of them. 1 do however hope that you will accept rny apologies and that you will continue to read my articles. I will try my best to keep frorn any future problems but please keep i n mind that I amn just learning so any mistakes I make please forgive me of. it was not my intention if you read my article over you-wilî see to bring on any pain, hurt or anger. Once again I arn truly sorry please accept 'MY apoîogy. (Editor's Note: 1 think Rachaei is being a littie hard on herseif. It'is the editor's responsibility to catch these, things, flot hers. 1 accept responsibili- ty for this mistake. The naine was however, printed in at least two other local newspapers (that's where Rachaei got the naine in the first place). However, the Orono Weekly Times does flot feel that anyone needed to know the identity of the family Involved and should flot have printed the naine. Chalk it up to an inexperi- enced writer and an editor who stili has a lot to learn.) Something to Smile about - National Dental Hygiene Week When you smile, think of your dental hygenists - espe- cially during National Dental Hygiene Week, which will be celebrated this year from October 20 to 26. Every year, more than 3.2 million people in Ontario visit their dental hygienîst to protect, their smiles. There are more than 5,000 registered dental hygienists practicing in Ontario. These dedicated professionals work to maintain your smile by providmng treatments that help to preve nt dental disease. In its salute to dental hygiene, the Ontario Dental Hygienists' Association (ODHA), has launched a public cam- paign to build awareness about the role and contribution of the dental hygienist. "There is a tendency to think of a dental hygienist simply as the person who cleans your teeth and teaches you how' to brush and floss." said ODHA President Cheryl Cancelli. "Although this is true, it is only part of the story. Dental- hygienists have a distinctive role to play as partners in oral health care. They also provide assessments, plan and imple- ment treatments and evaluate individual oral care needs.", "If we can raise awareness to this level. our campaign will have been successful," said Ms Is someone you know reaching a milestone? Wish themn happiness and congratulations in The Orono Weekly Times Cancelli. The ODHA was established in 1963 and represents'the interests and needs of its 3,200 member hygienists across Ontario. November is Wife Assault Prevention Month Are you- being abuscd? Do you know someone who is? There is help available. Statistics proved that there was a need for a women and children's shelter in'Clarington. The vision of a group of people led to the incorporation of Bethesda House in 1992. Bethesda House was opened on March 2, 1995 with seed fund- ing from St. Vincent De Paul and many individual donations from the community. The shel- ter was eventually approved for government funding to cover the room and board costs incurred by the residents in the shelter. T'his per diemn rate does flot cover the expenses of heat, hydro, maintenance, household needs or staff payroll. The shel- ter relies heaviîy on donations to cover operational costs. Since ifs openîng, the commu- nity bas been very supportive. This was especially demon- strated last Christmnas when the shelter was overwhelmed wNith donations. The Board and staff sincerely appreciate all contri- butions. Because the shelter is a non-profit charitable organi- zation, cash donations are eli- gible for a tax deductible receipt. Although the shelter has served as refuge for women anid children from as far away as Alberta and Nova Scotia, the majority of women are from the Clarington area. Most of the rcsidents are fleeing one abu- sive partner but some are also escaping from other family members. The location of the shelter is kept confidential to ensure the( saf-ety of its resi- dents and staffl. The children who corne into the shelter with their mothers are fleeing abusive situations. In many instances the children are in serious crisis after being assaulted or witnessing the abuse of their mothers, siblings or other femnale caregivers. Bethesda House can house as many as 15 at one time. During its first eighteen rnonths of operations, the shelter was refuge for over 250 women and chîldren and handIed 850 crisis and support calls. Bethesda House employs support and advocacy workers twenty-four hours a day. About 20 volun- teers give of their Urne after a thorough training period. A vol- unteer Board works with the Executive Director to end ure the successful operation of the shelter. They are always in search of new fund raising ideasto improve the ability of the shelter to better serve its residents. Most recently, they have acquired a Nevada Ticket outiet which will soon-be in operation at Tir's Fifth Wheel in Bowmanville (Waverly Rd. & 401) with proceeds going to support the shelter. Plans are in the works for a Fashion Show to be held in Courtroom #l, Church Street, Bowmanville on Wednesday, November 2Oth at 7:30 p.m. Cail the shelter's business uine at 623-6045 for ticket information.
