8 - Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 27, 1996 Children's Book Browsing by Janet Standeven One of my favorite children's authors is Jean Little. She pulls even the most reluctant reader into her warm realistic stories. Jean was born blind and by the time she was two she was able to see slightly. Her early school years were difficult because of her differences and she also suffered from strabismus (cross eyes) which subjected her to taunting and bullying. She immersed herself in books and with encouragement from her parents began writing poetry and stories. When she was sev- enteen her poetry was pub lished and after teaching at the Guelph Crippled Children's Centre her first novel Mine for Keeps was published. After suf- fering from glaucoma and hav- ing surgery to remove one eye Jean continued to write picture books, juvenile novels and young adult. She has also writ- ten two autobiographies. Jean lives near Elora On, with her sister and Great niece. Picture Book: Bats About Basebal This is a wonderful "play of words" story about Ryder and his Nana who is bats about baseball. Once baseball season begins Ryder tries to get his Nana to listen to him but she is too caught up in the game to hear him. This book was co written with Claire Mackay and illustrated by Kim Lafave, who have both won awards for their books. Other picture books by Jean are Once a Golden Apple, Jess Was The Brave One, and Revenge of the Small Small. Juvenile Novel: Mine For Keeps is the story of Sally Copeland who is handicapped and has come home to live with her family. She has attended a special school for handicapped children but now she must go to a public school and regular classes. This is a warm story of friendship, bonding and love. Other books include Mama 's Going to Buy You A Mockingbird- a story about the death of a parent to cancer- and One to Grow On and Defferent Dragons. Young Adult: Little by Little and Stars Come Out Wthin are memoirs of Jean s very full and sometimes difficult life. They are stories of courage, love and joy and a must read for all ages. One of Jeans more recent books His Banner Over Me is based on her Mother's childhood. It is a story of a young girl who has moved to Canada from Taiwan and is left with relatives when her parents go back to work as missionaries. Jean lias written over twenty books and is enjoyed by young and old alike.
