Thie gas monitoring delivery §ystem monitors the amount of anaesthetic being administered during surgery. Patricia Dowvn, Program Director of trie Hospital's Surgical Care Program and Jim Fieler of the Hospital Board accept the cheque from ,Tune Hunfer, President of the Auxiliary and Doris Weicb, Past President. Giligan 's Island Wow! A damiburst of memo- ries, rigrit? Youir brain explodes with an Aladdin's Cave of TV reveries. You see a decsert island .palm trees .. an-d seven cast- aways about as different from eacb other as buman beîngs can get. There's the Professor and trie skipper and- prissy Mary Ann and suitry Ginger and of course. dopey Gilligan bimself with eyes like golf balîs staring out from under that ridiculous cloth bat.... Tbere's one other thing you remember too. You remember that Gilligan's Island was on the air for your entire youtb. Forever, practicaily. Weil ... not quite. Believe it or not, Gilligan's Island only last- ed for three seasons. There are exactiy 98 original episodes of thie show. And tbey ail aired between 1964 and 1967. 'Of course, that's not count- ing reruns. If you count reruns, Gilligan's Island bas been on trie air more times than, Eizabeth Taylor's said 'I do'. FIl tell you a few other things you probably didn't know about Gilligan's Island. - Gilligan's first name was Willie. e Trie castaways less-than- fabled craft the SS Minnow was not named after trie diminutive, immature fish of that name. It was a thinly disguised slap in trie face of one Newton S. Minnow, a TV executive who was loathed by Sheidon Schwartz, trie creator ot Gilligans Island. AIl of whicb sbould not lead you to trie conclusion that 1 am some kind of a Gilligan's Island Trivia Nut. That distinction belongs to Robert Jarvis wbo, when rie isn't watcriing reruns with names like St. Gilligan and The Dragon or Love Me, Love My Skipper cari be found teacbing Maritime Law at Nova Eastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Like most-micdle- aging, middie-class North Americans, Professor Jarvis grew up-watcbing Giligan's Island, but he watched eacb episode with a sense that some- thing was ... mîssing. After some years of medita- tion, Professor Jarvis realized what was missing. There were no lawyers on Giligan's Island. WelI, then the Professor did what any self respecting lawyer would do under the circum- stances. He set out to prove tbrough complicated reasoning and interminable evidence that there actually was a lawyer on the island. According to the dili- gent and painstaking Jarvis - who watched ail 98 episodes with a yeilow ined legal pad on his knee -- the absent-minded Professor Roy Hînkley actualiy bad a law degree among his many academie honours -- he just forgot to mention it on air. Jarvis points outthat in one Gilligans Island episode - Court-Martial - the castaways set up a mock court with trie Professor presiding as judge. 1As 1 say, Professor Jarvis' evidence is al ircumstantial and for me, about as convincing as O.J.'s defense. 1 may not have watched all 98 episodes of Gilligans Island, but I watched enough shows to conclude that Gilligan's Island lacked a great many things. It had no urban sprawl, no traffic jams, no air pollution, muggings, swarm- ings, or income tax., Giligans Island had no Newt Gingricri, no Lucien Bouchard. And it had no lawyers. Heul, why do you think mil- lions ol TV viewers fell in love with Glligan's Island in thie first place? On the afternoon of December 7, trie stable doors swung wide to WPIcome an esti- mated 600 gue§ts to Trillium Morgan Horse Farm's Seventri Annual Christirias Festival in Orono. Thie aniluai Christmas spectacular sëeemed a toucri more vibrant th-an in past festi- vals. Evcii old Saint Nick found time to visit trie horse farm. Twenty-four litres of hot apple eider was served to the some- wbhat chilled visitors, and hun- dreds of decorated candy canes were distributed to the chifidren. Mid way trirougritrie festivities, owners and hosts Bob and Cathy Sampson hamnessed the farm's leading sire, trie Morgan stailion Triiiiuma Samson. He was hitched to a 1907 Baynes carniage (a Cadillac in its day) wbich was adomned witb deco- rations and jingle belis. For tbirty minutes, trie stallion paraded around 'the indoor arena, acceptmng passengers for a ride in this graceful antique carriage. This year's stali decorating contestants provided trie public with a wide variety of themes and designs to, choose from. In all,' twenty stails were entered in the competition. Voting for their favourite staîl in several categories proved challenging to say the least. Many of triese staîl creations took several hours'and. in some cases, days to complete. On occasion, as trie large gatriering of visitors meandered tbrough the stable aides becaine impassable, as people took their time to delib- erate. Tabuiating the ballots was tedious. but after two bours of computer assisted ver- ification, the results of trie win- ning entries were known. Almost ail of the divisional win- ners had won by just mere votes over their competition, proving trie degree of difficulty in selecting just one design per category. In trie Cbildren's Division, thie entry of Joanne Moore of Oshawa won trie cbampionsbip ribbon for ber interpretation of "Trie Nigrit before Christmas". Trie Reserve Champion title went to first time participant, Kari Squire of Newcastle and ber stali titled "Treats for Precious".
