Orono Weekly Times Main Street P.O. Box 209 Orono ON LOB 1 MO *Dear Editor: Our beautiful wintcr is approaching. We Canadians often define ourselves i rela- tion ta this season of cold. We brag about aur hardiness in the f ace of bitter wirids and hard- driven snaw. We regcale aur- selves with tales of record snows in 72 or the blizzards of '87 aid :'94. We gloat a-bout aur abilities1to overcomne the worst that wvinter dishes out, particui larly when we see aur Amnericari cousins brought ta a standstill by what we would cansider a pleasit littie snowrfall. Anid we are right ta boast. As a nation, we have adapted weli ta the harshness of winter. We avercome many hardiships ta ensure that we cari carry on aur lives within the confines of aur sometimes cruel environiment. Unfortunately, sametimes we gloaftota loudly and Jet foolhar- diness overtake mur usuaiiy excellent Canadian common sense. We cari go overboard in aur attempts ta prove our- abil- ity ta deal with winter's warst and the resuit can mean injury or death. Evervy yar, hundreds af us are, kilied or inju Lred because we dlon't take into full account, the harshness of winter. We yen- ture onto aur highways as if it were mnid-sumnmer, not consid- erîng the icy surfaces or thle reduced visibility during snaw- faits. We drive taa fasi for the condition of the road. 'We stay taa close ta other cars despite the langer braking distance required. We rush because we don't take thie extra timie need- ed to get wlhere we are going. We too ofteri get behiind the wheei, defying nature ta stop uis froim getting ta wark meetings and appointments even whien we are warned ta stay off the, roads. Ail this because of the pride we take in not letting the weathl er contrai aur live s. it is this false pride that kiffs anid injures mnary of us. We should, insteadl, be praud when ive decide, ta stay at homne when roads are treacherous, ta deiay aur marning trek ta wark until the weather impraves, ta pastpone mieetingIs and appoinitmrents ta another day when we hope the weather will be better. We shouild take pride tinaur recog- niton that we can't always take on nature and win. We should boast of aur gaad cammon sense that saves lives and pre- vents tirnneGessary injuries. Then w cari truly say that we have adapted well ta aur envi- ronmrent.
