New casino cornes to Scugog Island The -Great Blue Heron Charitable Casino and Bingo - on Scugog Isandjust east of Port Perry - may be open for business as early as the end of the month. Thomas Keller, blue Heron's general manag- er says -we're flot trying to compete wth a commercial operation like Casino >Rama for high rollers, because.we just can't do that". The maxi- mum bet allowed at the new casino will be $10.. Mr. Keliner said he expects that up to 2,000 people a day will try their luck in the casino. Local residents are very concemned about the casino complex having a negative impact.on their way of life. The only road leading to the complex has two lanes and won't be able to handie the volume of traffic. They also worry that the underground water table may not be able to withstand the large amounts of waste water that will be expelled from the facility. Local governments and interest groups had no say in the casino coming to the area. Mayor Howard Hall of Scugog Township said "I t's very dis- turblng to think that one group of people can do things that will have a huge impact right smack dab in the middle of the municipality. "We're bystanders," he said, "We've got no control". Area residents thought they had beaten the develop- ment at one point, because the previous financial back- ers had backed out, but now they have Austrian financiers.
