Henry Kissinlger Hep, if you can't take peop les money and then screwv'em.. you've got nw business being in the business. SariFranciscrimrnnor Wilie Brown I've figured out wby politi- cians almost neyer bave beards. Ah Ibhat cbin fur would make it too bard to tell bare-faced lies. Not mhat we Canucks bave any cause to turn up our noses at Amnerican politicos. We turn out a pretty bardy breed of truth stretcbers on mbis side of mhe border too. Just recently. Glen Clark issued a public apology for, abb, misleading tbe public prior to bis election as pre- mier of Britisb Columbia last year. Clark and bis Knee Dippers won the election largely on mhe strengmh of mhe $116 million surplus tbey said tmey bad in me govemn- m ent coffers. Arthur Black But OOPS __- after the votes were counted it turned out that the people of B.C. were faced with a $369 million deficit instead. "The numbers kept chang- ing- explainïed Premier Clark. Yeah, well. ..creative book- keeping can do that, Glen. Then tbere's the spectacle of, the Prime Mînister of Canada apologizing for tbe *misuniderstanding" over the GST. Just because a guy' promises mhat if elected be'll get id of a tax. doesn't mean that, if elected, be'll, err, get rid of a t,_. The tragedy here is n ot that our politicians lie to us - h el, most of tbem start out as lawyers --wbat do you expeet? The tragedy is, we keep falling for it. Election afler election, party after party, personality after per- sonality.- ThHey promise the moon, we give them our votes and then..... Well, tbey give us a moon ail1 right, but not the one we expected. And il doesn't seem 10o do thema any lasting damage. Tbere are no posses of out- raged citizens bumning cross- es on Glien Carýk's front lawn. If he manages to keep bis Hush PuppiÊs out of bis moutb for the next few montbs, Chretien figures to get re-elected as Prime Minister. Politicians can lie and prosper. Most of us can't. Like, for instance tbe two university students facing mheir big final in Cbemistry. Tbey weren't too worried. Tbey'd botb done well in tbe quizzes and the midterms and mhe labs. In fact. mhey were so confi- dent tbat tbey declded to Party Down tbe weekend before tbe Chemistry Final, instead of studying. They partied big and bard - - 5 big and bard that they were too bungover to even write their exam, mucb less study for IL. Tbey decided a lie was in order. Tbey called tbeir Cbemistry prof and explained that tbey'd been out of town for tbe weekenid, bad a fiat tire, didn't bave a spare and couldn't gel anybody tb belp mhem until it was too late. The professor listened to mheir story, agreed mhat mhey'd bad some tougb luck and could write the exam the fol- lowing day. Tbe two students were ecstatic. Tbey studied al nigbt and met the professor the following morning. Tbe professor banded eacb of mhem a copy of the two-page examination and usbered mhem mbntseparate rooms. Tbe first page was a snap. A simple problem wormh five percent of tbeir final mark that they eacb solved in no time at al Bowmanville Sehool News The Bowmanville Senior Public School staffand stu- dents are proud to pres ent an upcoming production of the musical OLIVER.
