Since ret1rifig it has been our intention to take in some of the jazz clubs in the city s0 we do scan the comlng events column pertaining to jazz. We are now somewbat famîliar wltb the names of the clubs, and some of the entertainers. Paradise Inn, Queen/Parliament area, was offering Sunday brunch along wlth Charnie and her jazz singîng. The location was of great interest as it was no more than ten minutes-to the Leslie Street Spit and bird watching. This was a natural - Itjust had to be a 'go' and a *go' it was. Her program opened witb "The Way You Smile" and continued with selections from the thirties. t is sur- prising how some of those son gs have beld up over the periodof time. The program indeed was ligbt j azz and for me enjoyable. Comlng back to the car my heart skipped a beat wben I saw a card tucked under the wlper. "What a ticket for park- ing on Sunday?" It read "You Could Have Been A Victim". You can real- ize this encouraged me to read on! t was from the Community Response, Unit, 51 Division, of the Toronto Police Department in part- nership witb the Office of AI Leach, M.P.P. St. George - St. David. We have read about Si Division and Ai Leach is that well-known Captain of the proposed Toronto Mega City sbip. It was about helping figbt tbeft from vehicles outlining points to belp offset such thefts of which some I had not followed. Breathing a sigh of relief t was off to the Leslie Street Spit to join other birdwatch- ers, walkers, runners, bikers and bladers. SThe Spit is an interesting piece of property some five to six kîlometers in lengtb. t has been developed over a number of years with the deposit of dlean rubble, old cement, pavement, earth etc. into the lake. Man bas no more than Ievel led the rubble and left nature then to do its own tbing. As a result it bas become home to wildlife. Birdwatchers have been out in force of late due to the variety and number of owls wintering on the Spit. Our first sighting was a Snowy Owl sitting on the ice in a cove. It is not unusual for owls to sit on, the ice under certain conditions. Moles and mice venture out on the ice and thus become easy prey. t happened with this Snowy for ft flew off with its catch to perch, on a- post for lunch. Comling back along the Spit we enjoyed a Kest rel hov- ering above and streaking into the high weeds on a number of occasions for its prey. No success. Our last slgbting of the day was another Snowy attract- ing spectator attention as It sat on the roof of a haif-ton pick-up near the entrance to the Spit. More than- enougb for this week. U.
