Wedlnesday, March 19, 19~97 Tournament madness in Orono during During March Break, the Orono Novice and Atom Rep Teams combined together and held a very successful toumnament. The Novice Rep Tournament was held on Tues., March 11. Our boys opened the toumnament play- ing against its arch rival- - Newcastle Stars. In this meet- ing as well as others, our boys were just out-matched. Excellent play by Ryan Campney, Shane Winters, Mike Fuller, Justin Guillemette, and Doug Garlici. Orono Novice Rep was des- tined to be put into the 'B' pool after its loss to Newcastle. Orono then played the Oshawa Selects at 11:30 a.m. It just wasn't Orono's day to play hockey, Our boys gave it a valiant effort but lost out to a faster Oshawa team. Orono Major Plumbing was awarded a participation tro- phy by President Ray Bester. The hustier award was given to Evan Moore. Other notable hustiers on the team were Josh Flynn, Josh Moffat, Matt Bester, Davd Landman, Jason Geraldi, Garrett Wood and Andrew Fothergill. We were glad to see Brent Vanstone back on the team March break after recovermng from a bout of bronchitis. Many thanks go out to Andrew Fothergill and his dad for waking up the crowds witb bis musical interludes! The Novice Rep Parents volunteered their talents to work at the Atom Rep Tournament on Thurs., March 1 3th. A good time was had by ail volunteers espe- cially those of us wbo worked in the kitchen. Teams from Markbam. Caledon HuIs, Fenelon Falls, Stirling, and Ops feasted on a meal of spaghetti and meat- balîs prepared beautifully by Master Chef "Ross Winters". A gift table was carefully put together by Pat Moffat and Marie Landmani which allowed the klds to buy tick- ets on gifis that were donated by the businesses and the Novice Rep parents. Al monies raised by the two toumnaments wiIl go back into the organization. The Novice Rep tourna- ment was won by a very good stick-bandling team from Stayner, wbo beat out the team from lNewcastle. The Atom Rep toumnament B' Cbampionsbip was won by our own Atom Rep teain. Pineridge Insurance Novices celebrate win On March 1, Pinerîdge Insurance played against Bowmanville's Sport Shop. Bowmianville earned the first goal and with 1 minute left in the Ist period, Orono matched the goal. Scoring for Orono was Reid McDonald wbo seized an opportunity and neatly tucked the puck into Bowmanville's net. Unfortunately, th'e Sport Shop Club scored twice more in the second perlod and also in the third period to take a 5- 1 lead over Orono. Orono pressed on and earning another goal for Pineridge Insurance was speedy Scott Henderson defily assisted by Andy Kadykalo. This was the last goal of the game, Orono Pineridge Insurance suffered a 5-2 loss. Good effort Orono! On March 8, Orono Pinerîdge Insurance played Orono's Apple Blossom team. The Novices were playing at a fast pace botb teams striving bard. Pineridge Insurance broke the ice when Brandon West caught a pass from Robyn Henderson and "'steam-rolled" toward the Apple Blossom net - Brandons aim was true eamn- ing the only goal of the first period. This scoring theme seemed to spread througb the Pineridge Insurance Club like wildfire. Starting off the points in the second period was Doug Deboo who back- handed the puck into the net with the nimble assistance of Andy Kadykalo. Next was Cam Delorme who snatcbed up the pass from his couni- terpart Ryan Knox, to score. Repeating this was the same duo with roles reversed, Ryan Knox scoring witb the assis- tance of Cam Delorme. Apple Blossom's determination did not dimlnish and they opened the third period with a goal. However, the ecstatic Pineridge Insurance team could not be stopped and earnlng the final goal of the game was Doug Deboo with the assistance of Andy Kadlykalo. Orono Pineridge Insurance secured a 5-1 win (their first of the seasoni) over Orono's Apple Blossomi team. Celebrating the win are team members - Doug Deboo, Andy Kadykalo. Reid McDonald, John Gregg. Robyn Hienderson, Scott Henderson, Ryan Knox, Cam Delorme, Brandon West, Sarah Donnelly, Matt Smit, Josh McRob, Michael Hisson, Bryce Bourgeois and Andy Perun in net. Great team work Orono! Orono Pineridge Insurance Novice particîpated in a tour- nament hosted in Bowmanville over the March break. Briefly - Orono suf fered a 8-0 loss first game, bowever the second pxroved to be the opposite. Orono secured a 2-1 win over a team from Oshawa. Scorîng for Orono Pineridge Insurance was Brandon West, assisted by Reid McDonald (good going Reid!), and Ryan Knox asslsted by Cam Delorme and Scott Henderson (good work guys!). Orono enjoyed a win- ning streak as they captured a 3-2 win over another Oshawa team. Scoring for Orono was Andy Kadykalo assisted by Doug Deboo, Andy Kadykalo assisted by Ryan Knox (way to go Andy!) and Robin Henderson assist- ed by Brandon West (nice shot Rob! - great hustie Brandon!). The fourtb game was more strenuous' and Orono suffered a 5-i loss to Bowmanville's Young Drivers. It was a tense, fast-paced gaine. Young Driver's scored the first and only goal of the game, wrapping up 1-0 win for the "C" title over Orono's Pineridge Insurance. Despite the score, Orono portrayed a club with an excellent defense, superb back-check- lng by the forwards and Andy Perun absolutely excelled in net. Being that Young Drivers is at the top of the league and Orono Pineridgp Insurance at the bottom, the Orono team dîsplayed great improvement and a fine example of the rewards of team-play. Way to go Orono! Clarington Fire Department Fire Cails During the week of March 10 to March 16 the Clarington Fîre Department responded to the following emergency cails. The Fire Departmients responded to 3 chiminey fires, 10 motor vehicle accidents. 9 medical assistance, 1 assist other agency, 4 alarm activa- lion and 5 check-out calîs. Teams from Ops, Lafroy, Staynor; Fenelon Falls, Markbam, Caledon Hilîs and Omemee took part. Following the national antbemn, Orono played the fîrst game of the touranmet against Omemee. This excit- ing game remained scoreless for two periods, before Omemee got the first goal at 9:49 in the 3rd period. Orono Accessible Design tied the game 1'- i thlrty seconds later on a nice passing play by Jesse Price to Paul Richter to Justin Szymczak who popped it in the net. Unfortunately, with one minute left in the game. Omemee scored to win the game 2 - 1. Orono Accessible Design played their second game against Markham Selects. With their new found confi- dence, Orono took a 4 - 1 lead in the lirst period, and neyer looked back. The final score was 5 - 2 f'or Orono. -Accessible Design goal scor- ers were: Szyrnczak assisted by Kyle Cox andi Paul Richter: Richter assisted by Tyler Gregg and Szymczak: Curtis Robinson asslsted by Jeif Mercier, Szymczak unassist- ed and R obinson assisted by defenseman Kevin Martin. Chrîs Moffat, and Kienan Williams played a strong defensive game for Orono. Orono Accessible Design became the Don Henry Memorial Orono Atomi Tournaments "B" Champs 1997 with a convincing shutout 4 - 0 over Caledon Hiîls. Kevin Martin and Jamie Wý,hitehead sbared equally the goal tendlng duties for each gaine and deserved this shut out. The strong forechecking play of Nathan Caruana and Greg Dunham, certainly helped. Goal scorers for Orono were: Robinson assist- ed by Kyle Allin and Briani Pisani, Gregg assisted by Szymczak and Price: Gregg assisted by Szymczak and Szymiczak unassisted. The parents and players wlh to extend their appreci- ation to the coacbing team of the Orono Accessible Design for the dedicated liard work and patience to finally con- vince this team of their talent and abîlity to win.
