4 Orono Weekly Times. Wednesday, March 2G. 1997 Kinsmen Minor Bantams bow out to Pickering The Kinsmen Minor Bantams finished the 1996/97 hockey season on Saturday, March 22 losing game 3 in a best of three York-Simcoe playoff series to Pickering. Games 1 and 2 were exact opposites of each other as Rob Weir the Toro netminder and the team shut out Pickering in a 4-0 victory in game 1 and in game 2 the Toro squad got spring fever and couldn't muster any offence as they lost a 4-2 decision. Game 3 was a well played hockey game but as luck would have it the Kinsmen could not capitalize on several good scoring chances and Pickering did. The game was a back and forth affair as Pickering has a 2-1 lead after 1 period, and the game was tied 3-3 after 2 periods. In the third period the Toros threw everything they had at the opposition but came up empty on each and every occasion. Pickering scored the winner with 35 seconds left in the game to eliminate the Kinsmen team. The offence in the series was provided by Sean Pudlis (2g, la), Chris Laton (2g, la), Ian Gleeson (1 g, 2a), Mike Cyr (lg, la), Jared Greening (lg, la), Nick Smith (2a), Jon Black and Brandon Baker (1G), and Derek Broley, Dan Turcotte and Adam Smith with 1 assist each. The team overall had a successful season and can look forward to bigger and better things next year. The Minor Kinsmen Bantams would like to express our appreciation to the local Kinsmen club for their spon- sorship of the team for the 96/97 hockey season. As a parent 1 would like to say thank you to the coaching staff of Andy Turcotte, John Pudlis and Mike Laton for making this, an enjoyable and fun fllled hockey season for all concerned. Have a good spring and summer (if it ever arrives!) and we will see you next season. Pineridge Insurance begin play-offs on winning note First things first - Orono Pineridge Insurance played Bowmanville's Union Oil team, the final game of the regular season. The first period showed no score, but with five minutes left in the second period Bowmanville managed to score. One minute later Orono retaliated and putting the lst point on the score- board for Orono Pineridge Insurance was Andy Kadykalo who slammed the puck into the Bowmanville net, assisted by Doug Deboo. Union Oil managed to score twice in the third period and wrapped up a 3-1 win over Orono. Strong effort Orono! The Orono Pineridge Insurance Novices began their first play-off game of the sea- son against Orono's Apple Blossom team. Pineridge Insurance hit the ice eagerly and less than 1 minute into into the game, they earned their first point. Scoring for Orono was Ryan Knox with a deft wrist shot, who was well set-up by Cam Delorme and Josh McRob. Pineridge Insurance earned their sec- ond point of the game less than 2 minutes later when Cam Delorme carried the puck into open ice and manoevered the puck over to Ryan Knox who accurately placed the puck past the Apple Blossom goalie. The only goal earned in the sec- ond period was by the still determined Apple Blossom club. However, Pineridge Insurance was very deter- mined and played twice as hard in the third, resulting in another goal! Andy Kadykalo's strong arm zapped the puck between the pipes with the "Eagle-Eyed" assis- tance of Doug Deboo. Scoring the final goal of the game was Ryan Knox on a breakaway, successfully "Deking" past the Apple Blossom defense and finding the slot. Orono Pineridge Insurance wrapped up a 4-1 win over Orono Apple Blossom. Congratulations on your hat- trick Ryan! On Sunday, March 23 Apple Blossom met (Orono's other Novice team) Pineridge Insurance. Pineridge, under the wing of coach Donnelly, swarmed the Blossom's on the first shift to take a 2-0 lead. The Blossom's were caught flat footed in the first, but gained momentum throughout the game. Daniel Reilly playing a great game at center, scored a beauty top corner from Jonathen Picco and Emma Lunn. Lucas Szemiot gave the team some more excellent goaltending, while the crowd was periodi- cally being entertained by John Deboots Don Cherry impersonations. Kinsmen Toros come up short in Barrie The Kinsmen Minor Bantam Toros travelled through the year's worst win- ter storm on March 14 to par- ticipate in the Barrie tourna- ment. The Kinsmen squad took on Hamilton in their first game which turned out to be a-real seesaw battle. The Toros trailed 2-1 at the end of the first period but took the lead in the second, only to have the Hamilton team tie it at 3 with 25 seconds left in the period. Hamilton took a 5-3 lead halfway through the third period but the Toros kept it close scoring less than a minute later to make the score 5-4. The Kinsmen squad kept battling and tied the game at 5 with 55 sec- onds left on the clock. Final score Hamilton 6, Toros 5. The second game of the tournament pitted the Toros against the team from Vaughan. Vaughan scored first early in the opening peri- od to take a 1-0 lead which held up until 6 minutes into the second when the Kinsmen squad tied it at 1-1. Vaughan again took the lead late in the second stanze and entered the third nursing a 2-1 lead. The Toros caught fire in the third period erupt- ing for 5 goals to Vaughen's 1, making the final score Toros 6, Vaughan 3. The third game would determine if the Toros went on or not as they faced the unbeaten Barrie Flyers. The two teams played 24 minutes and 47 seconds of scoreless hockey. The goaltending at both ends was terrific and the game was fast and entertain- ing. The Toros got on the board with 5:13 remaining in the second period and took a 1 -0 lead into the final stanza. A determined Barrie team and a minute lapse by the Toros resulted in 3 goals in 2 minutes and 46 seconds by the opposition and the end of tournament play for the Clarington team. Final score Barrie 3 and Toros 1. The scoring throughout the tournament was spread amongst the team in support of the goaltending of Rob Weir. The pointgetters were Jared Greening (3g, la), Ian Gleeson (1g, 3a), Chris Laton (lG, 3a), Mike Cyr (2g, la), Sean Pudlis (2g, la), Derek Broley (3a), Nick Smith (3a), Jason Greenham (lg, la), Brandon Baker (lg, la), Jon Black (lg, la), Jay Henderson, Daryl Stockman and Dan Turcotte adding 1 assist each.
