C -rôno Weekly Tiiines-, Wednesday, April 2, 1I997 Fundraiser by the Rebekah's and Oddfellows On Thursday, March 27, 1997. the Odd Fellows and Rebekah centre Hall Board put on their annual fundrais- ing dinner for the mainte- nance of their building. Dinner was served to 108 people and rny nostrils told me that none would, have left hungry. Followlng the meal -a euchre card party waâs held with the followlng results: 1 - Jack Moffat 84, Ray Bxyson 80, George Dunlop 79, Violet Dunlopý 78; Low - Marshall Larmer: 50/50 Draw was won by Jean Anderson from Cobourg. by Roy Forrester Truck & Auto So wha t goes on 'Around Home'? At the beginning of the month a start was made li growlng our own flowers from seed, both annuals and perrenials. It required the construc- tion of a two-tiered structure in the basement providing space for eight plant flats. sufficîently lighted and heated. That beîng done we went into production with the first step being the, germination of seed. The first effort was a 100 percent success with a pack of geranium seed, il seeds. At the sarne time Fibrous Begonias was-a disaster, nothing. But success have been mounting to a point that six flats are now full and the geranlurns are a healthy four to five inches and with Impatiences li bloorn. 0f course there are some throw-outs that have been planted too early and would over-run- the indoor greenhouse if left in place. They can be restarted later, -I would hope. I have lacked, success with Asters and Chives as far as. germination is concerned. Sornething to leamn there I would imagine. lIn entioning Chives there are a number of other Herbs in the greenhouse with the thought of developlng a Herb garden unit.that would be sultable for the patio. lI some ways a conversation piece. 0f course I like Pansies and the number of boxes is proof of this. But there are other favourites - Vinca. SalIpglossis and I hope Linaria and Violas. They gre aIl dolng well. 1Yes, I am keeplng records as to when I should begin this operation for Individual plants and a few trees for next year. It's rather a bllnd run at the present. l'Il let you know how thlngs develop up to the end of April. Indeed I may be flooded out with plants. Our -Chuekie 0f The Week I was over in Bowman- ville picking up Aunt Donna at Kim Broorne's after they had returned from an evening dinner., The conversation flipped around a number of sub- jectsaîong with bîllng for natural gas. It brought about Kim bringing -out her buis both for gas and water. On reviewing the water bill she broke into hilartous laughter. - Printed across the *bottom of the bill and highlighted in red. "Please desist frorn reading your ,water metre. You are using the Serial Number of the meter. Please open the lid and read the revolving numbers". States Kimn, «I was only trylng to help Dennis (her husband) and I did wonder why I was always short one digit". This gives you some idea of what PC party leader John Charest means when he talks about a "new balance" withln confederation. Take as an example the tax points the member from Quebec talks about giving the provinces in support of health care. Few people understand the nuance of tax points. Givîng tax points means you allow the province to tax directly for services rather than the federal government collecting the money then rernitting it to the provinces. You might say, well that sounds efficient to me." But consider this, we are a nation, Nations should have national standards. Aren't we more than a collection of regions? Do we not want this nation? Who else is goîng to preserve it if a national gov- emnment doesn't? Take the case of Ralph Klein. Recently he s aid that he wanted to allow private clinics to extra bill. Obviously this creates a two tiered sys- tem of health care in the province of Alberta. Klein changed his mind when the federal govemment sald it would reduce transfer payments to the Province of Alberta. If we are to maintain this nation we must 'promote national standards frorn coast to coast to coast. No tbis doesn't mean Ottawa is lmposing Its willl frorn on high. But It does mean the fed- eral government should have - and work to maintain - a degree of clout to niake health care, education, or social pôl- icy prograrns equal in each province regardless of what region you reside or province you are rnovlng to. Canada now 15 one of the most decentralized countries lI the world. At what point does decentralization turn Into disintegration? As a federal member of Parliarnent 1 take very seri- ously my duty to Canadians to see disintegration doesn't happen. And 1 thlnk this Is what Canadians want. -Heaith care Is Just one example of the fabrie we've used to weave our national identlty together. Federal politiclans cannot allow the fabrlc to become threadbare. Doesn't Jon Charest under- stand this? Even federal Tory strate- glst and political commenta- tor Dalton Camp said the remedies the- young Tory leader is proposing for Canada are, to use bis words, "frankly embarrassing to read..." As a Canadian 1 arn com- pelled to ask that when poitU- clans talk about "balance," as the memiber from Sherbrooke Que. does, why is it always that balance means a shift in power to a province from the Government of Canada? Canadians must resist this "imbalanclng act." Our futures depend on it.
