Martial Arts expert, Reed Johnson is a certified black belt instructor who's been a dedlcated martial arts practi- tioner for over flfteen years. Reed teaches the art of 'Kempo' which has founding roots stretching back to 520 BC. Although Kempo was originally a "kung fu" style, it has over the years thrown away many of its Chinese aspects for a more Japanese "hard style" approach. Stili, many soft techniques can still be seen in Kempo. The Marason MartialArts Academy was formed in September 1995 and Sense'i Reed Johnson has been lnstructing the art of Kempo to his students in Orono for the past year and a haîf on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornitngs at the the Durham Senior Citizens Lodge. He teaches both novice and advanced classes. Reed says the Marason Martial Arts Academy can help change your life forever through meditation and developlng physical fitness, self discipline and self confi- dence, self defense, coordina- tion and enduirance. Reed Johnson to the ]eft and Marchand splltting the Grant redluction subject ta budget talks The Northumberland- Clarington Board of Education has lost $3.700.000 in provinciafl gov- errnment grants. -This is very disappoint- ing," Ron Sudds superinten- dent of business told trustees at the budget meeting. "We worked very aggressively and wlth every employee group to realize some savings." Last year the board's operating cost per pupil of $5.570 was $372 below the provincial average. Sudds says the provincial grant reduction could trans- late into a "local average mill rate increase of 5.03'cj ust lfor the reduction in grant. of' 3.4% after adjusting for growth . ..This represents a further downloading to the local ratepayer by the provin- cial government. ", In addition to the lost of provincial grant money the Board also faces enrollment growth at the elementary school level, tincreased senior- îty pay for teachers, and high- er payroll taxes for the Canada Pension Plan. The board's proposed total budget for 1997 currently stands at $148.914,533 com- pared to last year's budget of $146.223,300. The board's next budget meeting slated for Tulesday, April 1, 1997 took place at the board office in Cobourg.
