Crossing the Gap by Marie Nelson If you're a senior you have to associate with other seniors, join senior's clubs, live in senior's residences. traveTi in senior's groups and shop on senior's discount days, right? Wrong! There are many seniors who choose to cross the age gap and get 'L know people of aIl ages. Some of ttiem may even live up to the grand title of -elder'". EIders are a special breed; they aren't just old, they are wise and with that wisdom has corne the knowledge that each of us miust reach out and help others in whatever way we cari, Some of the eiders in our community have reached out to ýhare their time and wis- domi with children at Orono Public School. At the schooi, these eiders are known as Grand-Friends, although you would probably know them better by their names: Beth Carr, Shirley Locke, Kellie McDonell, Betty Prescott, t Joyce Rosseau and Dini Schoenmaker. Each Grand- Friend is paired with two, or more, students who nieed a little extra heîp with reading. The Grand-Friend reads a story and then discusses it with the child. The child ben- efits in many ways; they he.ar how an aduIt brings the wrlt- ten) word to life, they are encouraged to ask questions and express their thoughts and it helps build their self- esteem to have an eIder show a genuine interest in them and their youngclife. What about the Grand- Friends. dIo they benefit too? Absoluteiy! It's wonderful to have a chiîd treat you as a speciai friend. it's refreshing to hear about lîfe trom a younger point of view and it's rewarding to know you are helping a child develop a love of reading Chat will last a life- time. 1. There are more chiîdren at Orono Public Schooi who. would like a Grand-Friend. If you are an eider who loves to read and can volunteer 30 to 60 minutes a week, please caîl the school's volunteer coordinator, Marie Nelson, at 983-8278.
