Orono United church welcomes spring United Church Women News As part of their 'Sesqui- centennial Celebrations', the Orono United Church greeted spring with an uplifting, joy- ous concert with guests -The Country Four" and their own 0Orono Choir" this past Saturday evening at the Orono United Church. Rev. Mervyn Russell intro-' duced the church. organist Ms. Mary Claire MacKinnon and welcomed everyone in attendance. The enthusiastUc audience was treated to such favourites as UJust a Closer Walk With Thee', "How Great Thou Art-, and "Some Enchant-ed. Evening" by the choir and the quartet. Then.-the Country Four entertaîned a thoroughly Commission recognizes 'Earth Week' The Clarin gton Hydro CommiAssion recognized April 2lst to April 25th as Earth Week. Energr efficiency con- tests will be promoted with customers and employees. Prizes will be awarded to cus- tomers and employees sug- gesting the top energy effi- ciency tip. Rates decreased 1% April lst Effective April 1, 1997, Clarlngton Hydro customers received rate decreases on their hydro bills. Ontario Hydro provided their approval for Clarington Hydro to lower rates as of this date. The decrease marks three years in a row that Clarington has reduced rates. 1Clarington Hydro was able to decrease rates for the fol- lowlng reasons: 1) Improved local operating costs of 28% over the past two years; 2) Lower power purchase prices from Ontario Hydro. The Clarington Hydro Commis- sion lobbied for these changes; 3) Customers avoid- ing the peak period con- sumption which lowered Clarington Hydro power pur- chase costs. appreciative audience with their renditions of "What a Wonderful World", Tumn Your Radio On", "White Cliffs of Dover" and many other favourites. Aduits $4.00, Seniors $3.00 and --Children $2.00. by Isabelle Challice "Signs of Spring" the topic of devotional services at Orono United Church on Wednesday, April 9, with ladies of unit #3 in charge. Isabelle opened the meet- ing with welcome and read a "Spring" poem., Worship devotions were prepared by Margaret Gunter an-d presented by her sister Muriel in her absence. With Joyce Gray at piano several enjoyable hymns were sung. Betty Major presented a pret- ty poem. A short business period was conducted, to remind us of general U. C.W. on April 17, with a pot-luck supper and guest speaker from "Campbell's Soups." Each is to bring a can of soup for the Food Bank. 0f course our big adventure is our 'Quilt Show"ý on May 2 and 3. Lots of Help iieeded for this two day event. GANARASKA REGION CONSERVATION AUTHORiTV Ruth Alun gave the min- utes of the last meeting and Muriel gave the treasurer's report. At this Urne Olive MJilîson had her VCR set up and we welcomed the ladies of Unit # 1 to view a very thought-pro- voking video--'The Incredible Worth of a Womanf by Gary Smalley, author., This was very enjoyable and following this, the ladies of Unit 3 were entertained to a delicîous luncheon with Unit 1. There were 18 ladies ln. attendance. Isabelle thanked the ladies for luncheon.
