Born and raised in Winston Salem, Northi Carolina, George attended the University cf Northi Carofina wliere he recorded A Rose And A Baby Ruth in 1956 whicli soon became a million- selling "gold" record. For tliree years lie toured witli Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent and the Everly Brothers and worked closely-with people like Paul Anka and Johnny Nashi, even appearlng on Broadway with Louis Armstrong. In 1959 George IV moved te Nashville and made a con- certed effort te establish him- self in country music -- hits first love. Thi-s was considered a fairly radical move in those days and it was the first itme an established pop act had "gene country". Many people questoned the wisdom of lits decision. Cenway Twitty, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bllly "Crash" Craddock and others later fol- lowed suit. George joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1960 and began a recording career at RCA wltli Chet Atkins. A string ofecoun- try lits resulted in lits induc- tion to the "sidewalk cf the stars" at the Country Music Hall cf Fame. George IV is one cf few performers cf any genre who has liad lit records in eacli cf five consecutive decades: 50s tlirougli 90s.
