We need go back no further than the rise and fail of the Peterson governiment, the nose-dive of Lynn McLeod and the meteorlc rise of Mike Harris through his tax cuts for the wealthy and welfare cuts for the poor. AIL that has to happen is someone making a mistake or somneone eise hlttlng the right nerve. No one can predict the outcome of an election anymore. Who would have believed the Tories wth oniy two seats after the Lst election. The die is cast, however, and we wiil go to the poils on June 2nd and the governiment wili be formed at the overal will of the people in this free country. Canadians are concemned none the ieast being jobs and especiaily jobs for the younger generation. Tax cuts with a trlckle down stimulus was neyer proven successfulIin the U.S. or i Britain. We stlil lack such jobs in Ontario. Unlty is another concern for, we believe, Canadians. Chretien and Charest peg their hope i recognizing Quebec as a 'distinct society' i the Constitution. Preston Manning is totally on the otherside of the fence and Glles Duceppe a supporter of separation. But the unity talk is ail vague so far. There is a need to hear specifics not only on the unity issue but on ail issues reiating to Canadians for jobs, medicare and the building of a fairer society. Some weeks ago Alex Shepherd, M.P.P. for Durham stated in ie weekly coiumn the need for a strong federai. govermunent. t was lndicated that we dîd have one. We would agree to the need for a strong federai govermnent to over-ride the continuai demands of provincils i directing more authority from the feds to the provinces. This only weakens Canada. t divides and shuffles power and decisions Into mrry hands. Overail we lose. A strong government is not enough. We have lacked the most important ingredient fromi the Liberais - that of leadership. t is as if they have been afraid to stand-up and be counted., The action is muffied and the raliying mecca is, as a resuit, none existent. Chretien has drlbbled the bail and soft-shoed around most of the Issues with less than leadership qualities. Wouid if the Raptors could do as weil. They would be at the head of the NBA. Lets have clearlty on the issues. We can understand. O~WEEKLY limES Division of Loyal Printing Ltd. this morning? Ail hands went up. He then asked them what they ate? They had many answers -- bacon, eggs, bagels,, cereal, toast. He told them that we have so many choices of what to eat for every meal. David then told them that ail the things we eat are 1 grown by people who work bhard in the fields to grow enougli food for us. God gives the seeds, then the farmer plants and cares for the crops. In Manitoba there are great floods this year. The land will be wet for a long time. This will slow the planting. These people are losing their homes, and barns and the farmns will be damaged. The children's bymn was "Can A Little Child Like Me". The Prayer of Self- Examination and the Words of Assurance were given. The Scrîpture readings were from Deuteronomy 28:1-9, Mark 4:1-8. The Sermon was titled "A Spring Prayer". From the beginning of time people have prayed to many Gods for a fruitful har- vest. Even today the barvest prayers bave taken over. We celebrate harvest with festi- vals and many other events. Today, we are giving prayers for the land, the crops and the growers of the crops. .In the Bible we are told over and over again of bow food was used in celebrations. When God is pleased with His people, there- is an abundance. Wben He is displeased with His people--a famine. Jesus always blessed food and gave thanks. Today, there 15 50 much junk food, so many fast food places, we have forgotten the importance of the growing of the food we eat. We ignore or neglect the source of our food. We pollute the land, the water, the air. We have caused a hole in the ozone layer. We have destroyed forests and left dust bowis in their place. Let us return to the past. Le t us respect the land. Let us respect.the farmer who grows what we eat. Let us give thanks to God who provided the seeds. Let us pray for al those wbo work the land and for their families. Let us ask for forgiveness for what we have done to our world. Let us affirm our faith and look to (KENDAL COLUMN Golf privilegebook by Phyllis Lowery - - -E - Tbis past week bas fmnally feit, like we are biaving spring weather altbough slightly cooler than 1 would like.
