Arthur Black If I'd known I was going ta live this long Id have taken better care of myseif. Eubie Blake You said it, Eubie. I'm not nearly as ancient as the leg- endary ivory tiekier was when lie made that observation, but 1 know what he was talking about. Each morniing I look at my reflection in the bathroom mirror and think the same sad thouglit: If I'd known I was gong to live this long, why did I... .gotoalltliosepar- ti es eatallthatj unkfood- doallthosdrugsdrinkallthat- boozesmokealthosecigarettes There's an aid story about a circus strongman known around the world for lits abil- ity to lift incredible weights off tlie ground. A newspaper reporter asked hlma how lie came ta be sa miglity. The strongman explained that he'd been raised on a cattie farm. One day in lits youtli, as lie was carrying a newbomn caîf ta Uts motlier, it occurred ta him that it -wouldn't be too long befare tliat littie calf would be too heavy ta lift. Unfless.... Unless he mnade a practice of lifting the caif each and every day! He did -- and tliat's liow lie came ta be a circus strong man. or so the story goes. I'm not too interested in running off ta ja in tlie circus, but I admire the man's determina- tian. And it occurs ta me that if I liad just touclied may toes a hlaf dozen limes or done a, few deep knee bends every time tliat guy picked up lits caîf, I'd see a lielluva lot svel- ter silouhette eacli time I loaked in the bathroom mir- rar. Ah well. Too late for that. But I regret my sedentary ways evey now and tlien. For instance.. everytime I' thtnk of Everett W. Hosack. Hosack is a track and field champ. Let me quote one of lits reviews: "Irosack, brilliant -young hurdler, will uphold the stan- dard in tlie obstacle races. This athiete . . .las blossomed out into a formidable liurdle happer." What you need ta know ta put that revtew in perspective, is tliat it appeared in the Gainesville, Florida Daily Sun of May 2, 1924. Wliat you also need ta know is that Everett W. Hosack is stili competing - and setting world records at the age of 95. Tliis spring, Hosack trav- eled to Birmingliam., England to the European Indoor Veterans Athletics Championships where lie set a world record for the long jump. be added. And since lie was the only entrant in the 95 ta 99 years age bracket, lits tri- umph was a bit of a forgane conclusion. But Everett Hosack lias no illusions about lits win. "The only reason I am excelling naw," lie says, "ts that I have Ontario outlived ail my competitors." SUR -- wauld you, at your age, like la get up in front of a stadium full of spectatars and try your luck at the long jump? EveÈe-tt Hosack jumped six feet, eight inches -and he's 95. It'sbeen a lbusy year for Hosack. He alsa set world records at the Kent State Indoor Masters Meet in Ohio and as the Masters Indoor Cliamptonships in Greensboro, Nortli Carolina. Then there was lits triumph at the Nortli Çoast Masters Indoor Champianships and tlie Cleveland Classics Masters Meet, Nothing ta compare, of course, withi Hosacks achtievement at the World Championships in Japan, wliere lie carved a phenamenal 21 seconds off the world record for 400 metres. Mnd you, tliat was back in 1993. Hosack was only 91 then. I managed ta catch up with Everett Hosack between track meets last montli. I asked hlm if lieliad any a dvice for a pudgy, out of shape, over the bil guy about haîf lits age. Sliould I take up weight train- ing? Join a gym? Start jog, gtng? "Not really" lie satd. -1 used ta preacli vigorous exercise for ail, but now 1 believe you sliauld just do what makes you liappy. It makes mie hiappy ta campete." An-d it makes mie happy not ta. Tliank you Everet W. Hosack. 1 feel fitter already. Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple scierosis in the world.
