Last Wednesday night Clarke and Baldwin St. resi- dents met with Frank Wu - planning department and Mr. Bill Daniels - president of the Kaitlin Group to address some issues raised at a pub-. lic meeting on April 7, 1997. The Newcastle residents became quite concerned when the Kaitlin Greup apphied to change the zoning on a parcel of land bounded by Clarke and Baldwin St. from R-i1 zoning to an appre- priate zone te allow smaller frontages, smaller lot set- backs and greater lot cover- ages. The residents felt that smaller homes with less open space around them would not be in keeping with the exist- ing neighbourhood. It is feared that the smaller lot sîzes would aise create a parking problem and that cars would constantly be parked on the street. The new zoning would allow for 25 homes te be build rather than the 21 at theR-i zoning. R-i1 zoning requiresa 60 ýfi. lot frontage. Mr. Daniels poînted eut that the smaller lot sizes would be as big as the largest lots at the Port of Newcastle develepment and that the sin- gle family larger homes at the Port of Newcastle would be replicated in this subdivision. Resident Jacqueline Lake reminded Mr Daniels that at the April 7 councîl meeting Mayor Harnre indicated that this proposed subdivision had nothing te do with the Port of Newcastle development and should be treated as a sepa- rate entity. In Dr. John Campbells pre- sentation he quoted from a brochure put eut by the Kaitlin Group stating that they are committed te work- ing with the existing neigh- bours. Dr. Campbell chal- lenged Mr. Daniels te work with the neighbours and withdraw bis re-zoning appli- cation.,In addressing Mr. Wu, Dr. -Camnpbell said: "the issue is simple, the residents want their quallty of life te stay the samne. De net sacri- fice us on the developers alter.» Mr. Daniels urged the res- idents te work wlth hlm and they could come up with a great product. Danlels sug- gested that the lot sizes on the perimeter of the property could retain the 60 ft frontages if preperties inside could be reduced. This way he could still get 4 more lots on thîs parcel -of land. Daniels stated: "if that was net goed enough wlth every- one in the reom, then you are net working wlth us." According te Danlels, 60 fi.
