One of the show's conveners told me the quuît was made to raise money for Exit light in the Kirby church. For a small fee people could have their naine embroldered on the quilt, thus becoming a part of local history. This quiît won "reserve chamr- pion" at the Orono Fair that fali. The quîlt a ccomplished what it set out to do, the exidt lights were paid for and installed from the proceeds, Had t now out- lived its usefulness? This quilt was a labour of love by the women who spent mnany hours working on t. Pinned on the quiît as it hung on display was a note stating it was for sale and there was a reserve bLd on t. Thfe convener who was explaining the quit to me had worked on t, her naine was on t along with her husbands who bas since passed away. She was very upset to see this quiît up for sale. I can see her point and agonize with her. I later spoke with one of the women who had a hand in putting this quilt up for sale. She explained to me that the Kirby Church is too small to bang the quiît on a permanent display and the cost of constructing a gflass fronted case to hang it i would be to biÈgh. The quit has been stored in a trunk for many years, t is well taken care of but it can't stay there forever. It was decid- ed that the quilt should be put upfor sale and the proceeds be tumned over to the church. Mary of the people whose naines are on the quilt have moved away or passed away and the younger people now do not have much feeling for the craftmanshiÉp and work that went into this quilt. Wbat happens now? The quilt was not sold last weekend. There was a nother signature quit on display i the show. It was a CGIT quiit made i 1933. It too went up for sale and was subsequently purchased for $6. However, the owner of tbis quilt bas made it avallable for display, thereby letting it live on as a piece of local history. Allowng for the fact that the Kirby qufit cannot stay were it is, maybe the best alternative would be private ownership as long as the buyer paid fair mar- ket value. As a condition to the sale 1 would ask that the owner keep the church informed as to its where abouts and agree to put it on display at local events when asked. I hope this does not mark the beginning of the end for "sig- nature qutîts " and the bistorical record they provide. FUTURE 0F THE 'COME ON IN' HOTEL Since coming to this town in January of this year, the ques- tion I am most often asked is: "Wheni are they gong to do some- thing about the old hotel?" It is considered a major eye sore and a blemish on our Main St. TI-is of course is i reference to the old Orono Hotel that experience two major fires ti the past few years. On Moiiday, May 5, 1 spoke with Steve Vokes - Director of Pubic Works and Gary Hanowich from the Building Departinent, they infonined ine that the demiolition permit was ready to be picked up. In their estimation the building was in a bad state of disrepair and the municipality wants t remloved. Mtinday evening 1 spoke withi Mr. David Marsh, co-owneir of the building. Mr. Marsh told me t is his wishi andi intent to demolish the northern portion of the building and demolition shou-ld begin on or around July 15, 1997. Residents hold ground (continued from page 1) lots are not easy to seil right now, therefore the need for sinaller lots. When asked why the devel- oper could not do the saine wvonderful ting on a larger lot, hie replied "cnmc. By the end of flie mieeting, Mr. Daniels offered to with- draw his application but indi- cated that lie imight sit on this property in its current state for quite some time. The residents were willing to take that risk rather than hiave their life style disrupted. Mr. Wu thanked everyone f'or comling to meeting, iniclud- ing Mr. Daniels who came in person even thougbh e was not required to dIo so. ttE~3~ ~rc~ ~r1xE~ Eciitcim.- To the editor Orono'Times In response to your recent editorial regarding "Pancake- Experience?" held at the Ganaraska Forest Centre on Saturday, April 19, 1997. Where you think that "Too many groups fromn away" were trying to cash in on a fundraiser", I can't think of an organization more involved in our community. We realize that you are new to the area' and mnay not be maare of who we are. The Great Pine Ridge Kinsmnen Club, which is part of the Association of Kmn (Canada's largest service orga- nization) hias been serving Orono and area for 27 years. Through a number of annual fundraising projects we are able to give support to our national charity of choice, the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, as well as mnany local orgau)zations. As the "Pancake Experi- ence" Project takes a lot of manpower, we welcome the "volunteers" that donated their time. (They even insisted on paying for their admission because of the entertainment value of the various shows and purpose of the event.) The groups inciuded the Boys Scouts of Canada, miemrbers of the Durham Region Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Kin memrbers from other clubs, and family and friends. AIl proceeds from this event will be going for the Ganaraska Forest Centres Outdoor Education Programi and Kinsmen supported needs within our community. Even thoughi we did not advertise having miapie syrup, we tried to obtain some. Unfortunateiy, due to warm weather conditions we wNere unable to. The facilities at the centre. are such that "cartiing" the pancakes from one building to another is the only way to serve. As to the amouint of food we served for $2.00 for chul- dren, we opted to keep the costs down, to eniable people to' view the demnonstrations at an affordabie cost. The cost of the entertainiment, food, and advertising made it impracti- cal to have an all-you-cani-eat meal. Regarding the commients on the envirornmental issues of the use of plates and cutlery, wve appreciate your concerns and wi conisider alternatives for future evenits. Duiring the event and since, we have received many positive commirents regaridinig the ex'perience. Its unfo-tui- nate that editorials 'doefot always refleet facts, but are based on one persons opinion. If any mnembers of the pub- lic Who were at this eve rit have any commients, please write the Great Pine Ridge Kinsmnen--we would appreci- ate any input. In closing, I would like to thank our sponsors, The Kaitlin Group and Ganaraska Leathercraft. Also the many volunteers, and members of the conmmnity who attended and supported us in "serving the community's greatest needs'". Youirs in Kin, Danny Stacheruk President The Great Pine Ridge Kinsmnen Dear Editor As you know, I introduced Bill C-')02, a Private Members' Bill, which wouild adopt an officiai pledge of allegiance to the Canadian Fiag. Since the introduction of the legisiation last June, the response has been over- whelming. Over 450 mnunici- pal couricils, representing coimmunities in every province and territory in Canada, have passed resolu- tions of support. As Weil, aimost 4,700 Canadians, liv- ing in 418 different communi- ties have also written, calied, signed petitions, or have offered their own version of a pledge of allegiance. Severai school ' boards have aiso passed reso jutions of support. Canadians have been pledging aliegiance to our flag in a variety of ways, using différent versions, for years. I have received letters from a number of people informning mie of the words that they used, or continue to use, in various piedges. My Bill would adopt an officiai pledge of ailegiance, one that can be used by ail Canadians in ciassroomns, before meetings, or wherever the flag is promu- lient. The idea of an officiai piedge of ailegiance camne to mie fromi a conlstitulent, Joyce 'Hamm-ond, .Who believes that reciting' the pledge wvould give Can adians "roots and a sense of beloniginig." I agree and I invite y'our readers to send mie thieir ideas, as miany have in the past, to Roomn 152, Confederation BuilIding, Houise of Commirons, Ottaw,ýa, Ontario, KI A 0A6.
