cKENDAL COLUMN FROM AROUND HOME LETTER TO) by Phyllis Lowery by Roy Forrester THE EDITOR Another week of cool weather, oh well at least we didn'i get too much rain. On Thursday night on the way home from Bowmianville there was snow coming down but it didni't lasi long. After the high winds and rain, Sunday was a bright breezy day. We were pleased to have a good turnout for Police Appreciation Day at the Kendal United Church. There were representatives of ail1 three branches of' [he Police Force, 0. P. P., Durhamn Regional and RCM.P. The choir accompanied by Carol Gardner on piano an-d special guesi Waynie Hieînrichs on guitar sang a beautiful song, "Mansion Over The Hilltop". Rev. Black welcomed us al to worship and thanked our special guesis for joining us. We were also pleased to wel- come Glen Larmer and his wife, Glen is President of Presbytery and hie brought greetings from Presbytery. The Christ Candle was lit and Prayers of Thankfulness and Concemr were given. The Gathering hymns were, "Worship The Lord", "JoyIsmTe Flag" and "0God Our Help". The choir then sang "A Sonig To Sing at Midnight" accompanied by Wayne Heinrlchs on the gui- tar. The children were called to the fronti. David iold themn that hie has been Chaplain for the OPP for twelve years and that hie goes out and rides with themn once a year. This lime hie rode with an 01f-ficer who is a member of our con- gregation. This Officer and one of lis colleagues came to the front and the children and of course the adulis were shown what ani Officer must wear when he is on dluty. Hle must wear a pressure vest, a gun, handcuffs, miace, flrst aid kit, a bily, a phone to cal for help. There are $0 many things he must have. Rev. Black said that there is one thing thai they must also have and we can not see it, that is a brain. The brain can be their greatest weapon. Thinking can get them out of trouble and danger. The children's hymn was, "Stand By Me". The Prayer of Self- Examination and the Words of Assurance were given. The Scripture was taken from Philipians 4; 5-9. ; The Sermon was tiiled, "Uphold The Right". The God whio gives you Peace, will be withi you. These are difficuit timies to be a Police Officer. We hear of the vicous nasty people who comm11iit horrible crimes and yet they often gel away withi onily a token slap 011 the wrist. Connrie Woodcock aý reporter tells of watchinig a mnother and son at a subway station, thiey were laughing and appeared to be eiIjoyirng each others company whý1-en a group of boys pushed past and didnt pay thle fare. The son wanted to do the samie thing but after the mother and hie talked, thiey paid their fare. The sonase wh should they do so and the mother was heard to say, because we do not choose to live that way. At one time we felt saf e in our homnes, in our cormmuni- lies, we trusted people. Now we are constantly told to lock our doors, watch oui for any uInusuaýl activilies where we are. Make sure you know whvIo is ait youir door. If you want to have fun., nexi lime a cashier gives you too much change, hold it ont and 'ask ihem to add h itagain, watch tLheir face, their expression. Jesus also lived in a time not much dif- fereni, He drove the money lenders and ihose selling wares oui of ihe Temple so people could Worship ihere as was intended. He also hiad compassion f -or the woman who begged for the crumibs from the table. Is ihis not wýhat we want, is this not whai we ask our Peace Officers. God came as Jesuis to live in our world and gave love, noÈtihe kind of love we read about in love stiies but the Love of Peace, Respect for Human Digiiy, Peace. We can affirm our Faith, our respect for human digniiy, together. We may make mistakes but we can go on and m-rake up for ihese. We can choose not to hive like that, we can choose to live up to our responsibilities. Th-e lhymn, "WhTen Voices Are Confushig", was sung. The Prayer of Thankfulness was given and the Offering was presented followed by the Prayer of Concern and Commiiment. The closing hymn was, -'We Build A New Tomnorrow". Following the SErvice everyone was invited mbt the C.E. roonwhiere a bounlifuil lunch was served. Thanks to ail whlo provided this lunch. Have you got your tickets for the George Hamilton IV concert. There is a small window of' opportunity, on two occasions during the year, for those from the public to attend a three day session. 1 was fortunate to be able to attend for (lhe three days lasi week along with Derrick Anderson, formerly of Oronio and now of' the Bewdleyý area. I was a litile laie in arriving ai the Station on Thursday everiing and missed some of the pre- information session along with the alloiting of sleeping arrangements. I was bold that some beds were still available in flhe White House along with accommodation in the smiall cabins. .The cabins are in a picturesque setling, possibly S' by 10' and accommodlate two in a double bunk. Derrick pipes up. "Take a Heritage Cabin, thley're '.cool"'. 0f course Derrick is of the younger generalion and 1 do know that 'cool' to thaï: genieration has m-eanings fromi neat to terrific etc. Noting to do with temp- eratuire i all. "You deserve it, I couild hiave spent the night in total bliss in the White Houjse", retorts Forrester. 1 guess both Derrick and 1 mnust have liked this 'cool' Heritage atmosphere because we spent the next two nights in the unheated cabins.
