Beverly Wakefield announcing INTER AC candidacy for local councillor Today 1I îa anouncing imy candidacy for Local Councillor for the new Clarinigton Ward 4 (Clarke Tw'up.) in the Municipal elec- tion ta bc beld on Novemiber 10, 1997, Witbi my family, I have lived in the village of' Orono since 1975) aind worked for Jmajny years with my bu band i ur 1Insurance Brokerage. 1 feel that I bave a lot ta offer tbe residents of Ward 4 at tbe Couticil table. During tbe past 22 years 1 bave been active in the comi- mnunity, working at different times with Meals-on Wheels, Commnuniity Care, the YWCA, the Orono Town Hall Board (six years) and tbe Clarington Municipal Library Board (six years). For tbe past tbree years it hias been my privilege to serve mny constituents on the Nortbumberland- Clarington Board of Due ta a three day visit ta tbe Kingston area over the, past week it lias left littie time for birding in aur particular area. I do expect we are in a transition period awaiting tbe flusb of Warb)lers that are due thîs week-end. However I was somiewbat surprised during a short visit to tbe Wilmot Creek marsh to witness a Caspian Terri divlng for small fisb in tbe open waters of the marsb and a maie Gadwall swimmin*g about. The Caspian Temn was a rarity fifteen years ago in this part cof Ontario. Colonies have erupted bowever at Presquile Park and other similar environ- mental areas. -The visit east ta tlie Kingston area and( then, nortb was not witbout spending some timnebirding.- We added ta aur 1997 list a Barried Owl that first drew aur attention as it flew across the country road and coming ta rest in a Wbi-îte Pine. Our previous spotting of' a Barred Owl was in tbe area east of the homes along O'Cbanski Road in the ,winter of 1996. Two otber sigbtings of note was tbe sleek littie Grey-Blue Gnatcatcher and tbe Rufus-sided Towbee of' wbicb two were strongly singîng out toa(atract attention. 0f course tbiere were a number of the regular birds present on this excursion. Earlier this spring 1 bad put out three bird bouses for display in front of the biouse. A pair of Cbickadees are nesting in onie and it mui-st be abo0ut time f'or the batcbi to take place. Education. Nest-building ,,is uniderway but what bird is engineering the construction still remains a mystery. Last Yea-,r a birdhouse designed for a Great Crested Flycatcher had attracted the Great Crested within a day of being put in place in the backyard. Envirouimental place- mient and size-design has somrething to do with the success of attracting birds ta a bird bouse. You may question the successful placement of the birhose attracting the Chckadee -in- the very front of the lawn. Anothier attraction here is a supply of Black Sunflowver seed no more tban fifty feet away. T-hat's it for this week. if's time for my siesta. SO..IT COULDN'T HAPPEN HERE..EH? FIRES.. FLOODS.. Without putting too fine a point on lt, one could equate body functions with those of a maîchine toiling away at spe- cific tasks, crying out for good maintenance, respond- ing well ta good treainment, and stopping dead -when deprived of fuel or electric current. Body maintenance is a step on the road ta well-bieing. Fortunately there are a num- ber of basýic thiings we can do every, day which give our inbred batteries the chance ta wvork well.
