Contingent helps power Cobourg AAA Novices While many of us thought hockey was over for the sea- son -- that's not so for a num- ber of Durham Region Major Novices. The Cobourg Icemen AAA Summer Hockey Club will be playing a series of exhibition games and tournaments with teams fromn alI over the province and from the U.S. is made up of nine and ten year old ' boys from Oshawa, Courtice, Newcastle, Bow- manville, Cobourg, Baltimore, Grafion and our own 8 year old Matt Baxter from Orono. Matt .who plays left defense for the Icemen, scored the lone unassisted goal ini a 5-1 loss to the Marmora Young Guns in Marmora last Saturday, May 3rd and gained an assist in Cobourg on Saturday in an exciting fast- paced 6-6 tie against the Kawartha Canadiens fromi Peterborough. The Icemen found themselves behind 6-3 midway through the third period but finally found a way to solve the Canadien's goalie by scoring three unanswered goals with less than six min- utes left in the game. Also helping the Icemen put num- bers on the board was Jesse Gilbert of Courtice with a goal. Back in Cobourg the day after bowing out to the Marmora Young Guns the Icemen got revenge by sound- ly defeating them 5-2. Brian Piggott of Courtice con- tributed to the win by scoring one goal and assisting on two others. Jesse Gilbert chipped in with 1 goal and an assist. Jesse Francis of Bowmanville split goaltending duties with the other Cobourg goalie to share in the win. Kennedy who has been a superintendent over ten years also served in the personnel and special services portfolios as part of his senior adminis- trative duties. He was princi- pal of Cobourg East high school before becoming a superintendent in the 1986-87 school year. Kennedy also worked as a high school teacher, coordina- tor of special services and liaison officer with the Ministry of Education. Director of Education Dick Malowney says he viewed Kennedy as a strong member of the board's adm)inistrative teamn whose absence "will leave a large gap in our administrative structure." "His calm miauner and keen sense of humnour have contributed much to the orga- nization and 1 will miss himn both personally and profes- sionially."e Kennedy plans to spend more timie with his family, travel and pursue personal interests. Stili no smoking on school prroperty Provincial government officials hiave written to the board saying the Tobacco Control *Act will not be amended to allow high school students to smnoke on school property. The letters from the Minister of Education and Minister of Health were a response to an earlier resolu-. tion by trustees in support of a Brant County Board of Education recommnendation. Thle recommendation called for amendments to the Act so that outdoor smoking areas could be reinstated on school property. High school administrative staff feit the change was necessary to ensure proper supervision during school hours. Students promise to boycott contract services Students of Port Hope High School will boycott the school cafeteria if services are contracted out. Speaking on hehaif of the Student Government, Ben Chapman told trustees at last night's board meeting that current cafeteria staff "are part of-our school community. (They) have become mentors and are always there if we need to talk. That was very apparent with the recent tragedies." He said that rumors were strong that "everybody would boy- cott the cafeteria" and opt to "browii-bag it", rather than use a contracted service.' Both Chapman and Rob Hood who spoke for the Port Hope High School Parent Council both expressed con- cern that contract teplace- ments would not be directly accountable to the board and might not have the samne level of commitmient to students. "Five people who have served this board faithfully for many years will have their livelihood taken from t-hemn while their jobs wilI continue to exist" Hood said.; Trustee to be allowed back to elosed meetings Trustees with th e 'Northumherland-C larington Board of Education last night voted to permit Port Hope area trustee Marg Connor back into closed portions of board meetings. The decision came following a series of correspondence between the board's chairperson and legal counsel and Connor and hier legal counsel. Board chairperson, Bob Willsher told trustees during the open portion of the mneet- ing that correspondence from Connor "satisfied" the board's requirements. Trustees approved the motion to readmit Connor "effective May 22, 1 997" in a ten to two vote. On the advice of her legal counsel Connor did not attend the in-camera portion of last night's meeting. Custodians and Cafeteria workers agreement ratified Trustees ratified a two- year agreement with custodi- ans and cafeteria workers, members of CUPE local 1206 (0 1). The new agreement extends the current contract to March 1998 with some minor changes. For example, it establishies a consultation process on a number of odd key issues such as technologi- cal change., benefit plans, and the futureof cafeteria opera- tions. The contract was earlier ratified by the approximately M0 cafeteria emiployees and the board's 198 custodians. Salary ranges for both groups from $12 to $15 an hour.
