Orono Weckly Times~ WCdne~day1 May 21,1997 3 C KE NDL A L COL U M N rON by Phyllis Lowery / More cool, damp weather but they, are promlsing warmer weather for this week, 1 certaly hope so. FlnaIly got the grass cut for the -flrst lime this year and where I started is ready to be cut again. The tuhips and daffodils have been lasting much better this sprtng, so somethlng good has corne out of the cooler weather. .Sunday started out clear and wlndy but qulckly turned colder and wet early in the afternoon. This was Pentecost Sunday and we bad qulte a few young visitors at the Church Service. Ail thle choir members were not present but we had a maie quartetof Doug Lewis, Don Peddar, Chris Webster and Grant Mcçonaghy they opened the Service with a beautiful rendi tion of "We Gather Here In Jesus Name". Rev. Black welconed everyone and lit the Christ Candie. We gave thanks for the safe arrivai of Erie Paul Foster, grandson of June and Wayne Foster, great-grandson of Elinor Foster and Ralph Geach also Emma Michelle Switzer born to Brad and Christina, Brad used to attend Kendal Church and sang in the choir, grandpar- ents are Jim and Helen Grills and,,Catherin.e and Melý Switzer, another great-grand- child 'for John an-d Phyllis Lowery. Sonry to report Mel Switzer is a patient in Kingston General Hospital and that Harland Elliott is stili on the waitlng list for admission to Kingston Hospital. The Gathering Hymns were, 'Worship Hlm", "Power in The Blood" and "By My Spirit". The quartet sang, "«Thank You, Lord". 1Coins for the miles to Manitoba were collected and counited and we travelled 234 miles that is a total of 399 miles s0 far, we figure we are half way between Massey and Blind River. The children were called forward, David told them the meaning of Pentecost, we cel- ebrate it as the day God gave His Spirit to the whole Church. In Hebrew is the word, "ruah" and in Greek the word "pneuma" these words translate into the words spir- it, breath of wind. We cannot see the wind but, we can feel the power of It, that is how we know that it 1.s there. That is the same as God's Holy Spirit, we can not see it but. we cari feel it and we know it is there. The children's hymn was "God Can Do It Again". The Scriptures were from Ezeiel 37: 1-10 and Acts 2: 1- 8, 11-21. The Sermon was titled, 'The Feast of Pentecost". 11ev. Black said that when he went to sunday school as a child, his favourite story was taken from Ezekiel and the song "Them Bones, Them Bones, Them Dry Bones". He said it conj oured up a picture in his mnd of a dry valley covered in dry human bones. Not a living soul was there except the Prophet but he could hear the voice of God talking to this Prophet. H1e said he could see the bones connectîng themselves together, thekneebone con- necting tothe thigh bone, then they became covered with flesh but they couldn't stand up, then there was a breath of air and they al stood up and there were enough of them to form a large army. Rev. Black said that when hgrwup he realizýed the power of God. the power' to breath new life into everyone. Pentecost is, to be born again, to receive the power of new life from God, if we accept the power of God, we can receive peace, power, strength and wisdom to, face what lies ahecad. 1Many do not know this and they endeavour to struggle on their own. The breath of God can lift you above the worries and struggles of today. God's presence can corne to you in manv wavs. perhaps as you watch a beautiful sunset, a beautiful picture, the birth of a baby or at a lime of being alone, a time of quietness. The power, the breath of the love of -God is there for al today, if we will accept it. The hymn, "The Spirit Came As Promised" was sung, -the,_Prayer ,of Thankfulness given and the Offering received. The hyrn, "We Believe i God Almighty" was sung and the Prayer- of, Self-, Examination and the Words of Assurance given. Communion was served. Theclosing hymn vas "Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory". Everyone was invited to stay for coffee and a lime of fellowship after the Service. Don't forget the George Hamilton Concert on Thursday, May 22, still a few tickets available, call Rev. Black or Harvey Thompson. Newtonville are.having a BeefSupper on Saturday, May 24th -put on by the U.C.W. A Ham and Salad Supper is being held in Kendal, ln the CE room on Saturday, June l4th, serving from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Next Sunday Lyle and Yvonne Bender will be in charge of the Church Service, in the absence of Rev. Black, Kendal Sunday School and Congregational Pîcnic will be held at the home of Harry and Joyce Boudreau on June 7th at 10:30 a.m. Sunday the 8th of June the Orange Lodges of Kendai and guests will be Worshipping with the Congregatio n of Kendai U.C. P.S. "The best' night sport to attend is, a comfortable bed". A New One I suppose it was some positive thinking that 1 was able to record a new specie o f Warbler as far as I was concemned. It happenedý at Prince Edward Point in Prince Edward Counity in the Federai Nature Lands. >Along the shore of Lake Ontario there is a strip of shrubby flatland through which the birds use as passage in: their spring migration. It can be real active as far as number of species and birds are concerned. The real flush may last but a few days. Over the weekend there were periodic small flushes in both numbers and species. Lots of Palm, Black and White. -Nashville, Magnolia, Yellow and Myrtie Warblers were to be seen. In looking at the Black and Whites it passed my mind that it would be great to see a Blackpoll and it urged me to look upthe bird as to its colourîng and markings. 1I began to look more closely at the Black and ,Whltes just in case because there are some similarities to the marklngs of the two birdsà. The Black-Throated ,Grey could well be lncluded' as a look-allke. Low-and-behold it was a day for a new sighling and it was a Blackpoll that came into view. The sighting was verified by a photographer who was close by. The bird is rather common but wi4th at least three and possibly four look- a-likes 1 have likely passed the bird over on other spring birding outings. It pays to look for detail in every, sighting. The Bl-ackpoll did make the trip worthwhile but.s0 did three blazing red Scarlet Tanagers and two American, Redstarts., Hiking along a trail seven maie Rose-breasted Grosbeaks with some females just keep 100 feet ahead for possibly fifteen minutes., The same happened with a small flock of seven to eight Northern Orioles. Another bonus for the morning and the sun had some heat in it to enjoy. Property -owners lose right to vote in sehool board elections Taxpayers who pay leduca- lion taxes for property that is not thieir main residence will notbe ailowed to vote in this year's school board elecions, thanks to the Fewer School Boards Act, which prohîbits voting anywhere but in a pri- miary residence. This includes cottage and business owners and anyone else who pays property taxes. It is about taxation with- out representation," said Lynn Peterson, president of the Ontario Public School Boards', Association. I can't imagine the government would intentlonally ignore this lar ge group of taxpaying citizens." Prior to the Fewer Schoo! Boards Act, taxpayers could vote- for any school board where they pay residential or business taxes for education. The new legislation now takes away that rlght and taxpayers may only vote in the area -of their primary residence. Property taxpayers may still, however,' vote municipally in al areas they pay taxes. Currently, the Ontario Public> School Boards' Association is challenging aspects of the Fewer School Boards Act,' încluding, this removal of elected represen- taltion for property taxation, in the courts.
